Stored Value Systems Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Comdata Corporation, announced the launch of the AMC Entertainment Card; an electronic cash card to be used as replacements for the theatre chain’s paper gift certificates. AMC becomes the first major motion picture theatre operator to nationally adopt a cash card component as a paperless alternative to traditional gift certificates. AMC operates 242 theatres with 3,500 screens.
“AMC has a history of leading the industry with new offerings, and the SVS Cash Card is another industry first,” said Mike Berry, SVS executive vice president and general manager. “Now AMC moviegoers can experience the convenience and portability of electronic cash, and can purchase the cards in the theatre or wherever they shop. Using the AMC Entertainment Card, AMC Theatre customers can purchase movie tickets and concessions at any U.S. location. The cards will be sold in its theatres, and AMC also plans to make the cards available at more than 1,400 supermarkets throughout the U.S. AMC plans to announce additional retail partners in the coming months. “The cinema industry is a natural fit for an electronic cash card,” said Berry. “We are pleased that AMC has chosen SVS to become its cash card provider, and to lead the industry with another innovation that’s certain to redefine the moviegoing experience in the near future.”
The debut of the AMC Entertainment Card coincides with the start of the busiest season for gift certificate sales. About half of all gift certificate sales occur between October and late December. Movie gift certificates also are highly popular for graduations, birthdays, and Father’s Day and Mother’s Day.
