Diners Club and MasterCard International said that they are pursuing an alliance to provide enhanced global acceptance to Diners Club North America cardholders, and enhanced U.S. and Canadian acceptance for Diners Club International cardholders.
The alliance would allow Diners Club cards that are issued in the United States and Canada to be reissued with the MasterCard brand on the front of the card in order to function as MasterCard cards. These cards would be accepted at the more than 22 million merchant locations worldwide where MasterCard credit cards are accepted.
In addition, Diners Club cards issued by Diners Club International franchises (outside the United States and Canada) will include the MasterCard brand on the back of the card, allowing these cards to be accepted at MasterCard merchants in the U.S. and Canada and processed as MasterCard transactions. When these cards are used outside of the United States or Canada, they will continue to be accepted and processed by Diners Club as they are today.
“In order to grow and strengthen the Diners Club brand, it was a natural fit to pursue an alliance with MasterCard for enhanced acceptance. Diners Club is a valuable part of the Citi Cards family, as it provides a premium, globally recognized brand, loyal customers, and an award-winning rewards program,” said Peter Knitzer, EVP, Citi Cards.
“This is truly a winning solution for all the parties involved. It also establishes a demonstrated framework for how MasterCard can work with key partners to leverage our system and network capabilities to create new and unique opportunities,” said Alan Heuer, MasterCard’s chief operating officer.
With this alliance, Diners Club North America will remain a key franchise within the Diners Club International network. The Diners Club International brand will retain its prominence as a global premium payment solution with superior benefits and exceptional service, while enhancing its opportunities for worldwide growth.
Diners Club International, Diners Club North America and MasterCard are currently working with all the necessary parties to reach a final agreement, which includes determining project timing, logistics, and other details of implementation.
Currently there are no changes to the Diners Club products or programs. Cardmembers should continue to use their cards as usual, and enjoy the outstanding features, benefits, and service they have come to expect from Diners Club.
