PSC Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Datalogic S.p.A., and a world leader in data capture technology, products, and services, is pleased to announce an important milestone in its ongoing relationship with Safeway Stores. The two companies have reached a multi- million dollar agreement to install up to 3,400 PSC Magellan(R) high- performance, retail point-of-sale (POS) scanners in Safeway’s front-end checkout lanes.
“PSC and Safeway have worked together for many years. Safeway testing labs have been an important testing location for the Magellan 8500 high-performance bi-optic scanners; their feedback has helped make PSC’s Magellan product family the best POS scanners available today,” said Matt Schler, GM, Retail Fixed Scanning. “Our continuing relationship with Safeway is one of strong, open communication; our goal is to help them improve the operational efficiency of their checkout by increasing speed, first pass read rates, and reliability.”
With many business partnerships the overall strength and value is often most evident at a time of crisis as is the case between Safeway and PSC. A few years ago, during the busy Holiday season, Safeway had difficulties with promotional gift cards. Upon learning of the problem, design engineers from PSC flew in to help Safeway personnel analyze the problem to understand why the cards weren’t scanning. The analysis concluded that the bar codes were out of specification. The analytical data provided by PSC ultimately enabled Safeway to work with card manufacturers to get the bar codes into spec. The solution saved Safeway and other retailers thousands of dollars in lost sales from unscannable gift cards.
“Magellan scanners are known throughout the retail industry for their quality and reliability and we pride ourselves in providing world class support for customers, no matter what the challenge. Customers like Safeway say that they can install a Magellan scanner and forget about it,” said Dave Sullivan, PSC Sr. VP of Sales, Services, and Marketing. “We often hear that our competitors’ products have issues during installation, including out of box failures, which must be extremely frustrating, especially if they result in excessive down-time and lost revenues.”
For the second year in a row, PSC Inc. has been recognized by Venture Development Corporation (VDC), an independent technology market research and consulting firm as the worldwide leader in total global shipments of stationary bar code scanners, due primarily to the strong market acceptance of the Magellan family of bi-optic scanners.
