Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd is expecting
60,000 cardholders for its first debit card — Bank Islam Tourist Friend
MasterCard Unembossed Prepaid Card this year.
Its managing director Datuk Zukri Samat said the card, which was
launched in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia Year 2007,
would be marketed through travel agents, the Tourism Ministry and State
Tourists from Europe, the Middle East and China are being aimed at to
take up the card, he said.
“Our main target will be the Chinese and Middle East tourists who are
expected to arrive here in droves in summer based on the tourist
arrivals in July last year,” he told a press conference after the launch.
For this year, the Tourism Ministry is expecting to receive 20.1 million
tourists and RM44.5 billion in tourism receipts.
Last year, Malaysia received 17.54 million international tourists, with
186,821 of them being visitors from the Middle East, resulting in total
receipts of RM36.27 billion.
Zukri said the new debit card would be widely accepted by tourists as it
would minimise theft and cash lost.
He said its newly launched debit card would contribute to its revenue
“For the first year, we do not expect the new debit card to contribute
very much to our bottom line,” he said.
Touching on its credit card circulation Zukri said Bank Islam expected
the number of its credit card holders to increase to 450,000 by June
next year from 250,000 currently.
The bank currently holds 1.5 percent market share of the credit card
