Oberthur Card Systems, the top provider of contactless payment cards and a leading supplier of HSPD 12 credentials to the U.S. federal government, has embarked on a multi-million dollar expansion at its U.S. manufacturing facilities and personalization centers.
The company installed two new presses in 2007 for its card manufacturing facilities and will add more presses and finishing equipment over the next 12 months to more than double its contactless capabilities. Additional investments will be made in the company’s smart card manufacturing capacity, including contact, dual, and dual-hybrid cards to support its rapidly growing government ID business.
Recently installed new state-of-art equipment with contactless modules will significantly increase Oberthur’s personalization capacity. Millions of dollars will be used for additional equipment and upgrades in the coming year, thus enabling the company to more than double its contactless personalization capacity. This will allow Oberthur to meet the sustained migration of its largest financial customers from conventional magnetic stripe cards to contactless .
“We are experiencing strong growth in orders and must increase our manufacturing and personalization capacity to keep up with increased demand for Oberthur’s end-to-end solutions,” says Antoine Kelman, vice president of personalization bureaus for the Americas.
The company will hire and train new associates to further emphasize customer service, allow for accelerated delivery and reduce time to market of new products. Oberthur also plans to standardize processes at its U.S. plants and increase the number of cards that can be printed on a sheet, which will permit more seamless, cost-effective printing. Upgrades to manufacturing process and service offerings include providing customers with real time scheduling software and prepress options such as proofs on plastic substrates and remote soft proofing.
“Our goal is to ensure that we continue to be the number one supplier of contactless cards in the U.S. and remain the leader in the government ID market. It’s a reputation that begins and ends with customer satisfaction,” says Jean Francois Durand, the company’s vice president of manufacturing for the Americas.
