Aconite EMV/smart card software has signed processing agreements
with Genia Technologia intent on serving the Brazilian payments market.
Aconite’s “FastTrack EMV” migration solution and Gênia Tecnologia
knowledge are projected to provide seamless EMV transaction
processing while Aconite’s “Smart PrePaid” application will afford the
rapid deployment of issuing and acquiring capabilities.

Mobile Banking Services Set to Take-Off

A new study has found that mobile phone users are increasingly comfortable making banking and purchase transactions. The Harris Interactive survey found that 16% of mobile phone subscribers already use mobile banking services, with 60% of these people using the services at least once a week. Many others presently not banking and buying on-the-go expressed interest in mobile banking, with 35% open to checking bank account balances and transferring funds via their mobile devices. A third of those surveyed also said they would like to receive text message alerts from their financial institutions. The survey also finds that on-the-go mobile purchases are on the rise. About 25 percent of mobile phone users with mobile access to the Internet now use their devices to buy goods and services online via a credit card.


VendTek Systems has launched its eFresh SMS solution for the
electronic delivery of consumers’ PINs via SMS to mobile phones.
This solution was developed partly in response to statistics showing
the global popularity of mobile phones, with developed countries
accounting for 56% of all mobile users. The “eFresh SMS” integrated
solution operates on POS, ATM, PC, and Web based distribution
points allowing merchants to request a PIN by sending an SMS to
the server with instant results. VendTek provides automated
transaction system software and solutions.

AccuPOS Food Services 2008 is Introduced

CA-based Attitude POSitive has rolled out “AccuPOS Food Services 2008” software for online ordering. AccuPOS Food Services 2008 is a full-featured food service POS software solution, ideal for both counter and full-service restaurants. It offers a rapid 2-3 keystroke sales process to help increase customer and employee satisfaction, and includes easy drag-n-drop set-up and ‘must-have’ features for the food services industry, such as touch-screen menu design, remote order printing, built-in credit card and gratuity processing, simple server checkout, comps and split checks, customized food prep instructions, customer loyalty tracking, and an online/Web orders interface. The software also includes powerful reports, including food and liquor cost, profit and loss, top selling items and bookkeeping to the accounting program such as QuickBooks, Peachtree, Simply Accounting and MAS.


For the expansion of operations, Huantong Singapore Telecom (GZGT) has
signed agreements with TCAM Technology. This agreements includes the
incorporation of R&D and the 30% acquisition of TCAM in the form
3,500,000 shares and SGD200,000 cash. Providing telecommunications
related products in Singapore, TCAM Technology offers international
system integrators, service providers, meter reading, network computing
applications and exports its GSM/GPRS products to over 55 countries
worldwide. Moreover, the company is projecting a 100% increase in sales
revenue, which reached SGD1.5 million in 2H07. Guangzhou Global
Telecom, phone handset and pre- paid calling card distributor
maintains cooperative relationships with China Telecom, China Mobile and
China Unicom.

Operating Expense Climbs 23BPS in January

Operating expenses for credit card issuers rose to 5.90% in January, about eight basis points above one-year ago. However, the figure was up 23 basis points from the prior month, according to CardData ([][1]). Operating expense is determined by dividing monthly gross operating expenses by the average managed card outstandings and then annualizing. Operating expense includes such items as credit processing, call center servicing, billing, collections, fraud management, and card issuance.

China Unionpay and Singapore OCBC Bank have partnered to launch the
“EasiRemit” real time remittance service in China. With the implementation
of CUP cards on the OCBC Mobile Banking network, Chinese expatriates
and travelers in Singapore are afforded a convenient method of fund
transferring, can remit money to beneficiaries in China through OCBC
Mobile Banking and over 400 OCBC ATMs in cooperation with the four
CUP member banks in China. Members of these banks can also use CUP
ATMs and conduct retail transactions at the 870,000 CUP merchant
outlets on a network that reaches 26 countries worldwide.


Access to the City of Manchester stadium is expected to take on a
different meaning with the introduction of the reloadable MasterCard
“Tap&Go” PayPass pilot. The recently launched pilot will be available
to 3,500 season ticket holders in the North Stand Level 2 and, in
addition to stadium access, the “Tap&Go” solutions will be accepted
for transaction purchases of under GBP10 at various in-stadium
merchants. When customers’ card devices register with merchants’
“PayPass” reader, transactions are completed requiring reduced
queuing times. The UK reflects a strong market for the “PayPass”
solution with GBP200 billion per annum of transactions less than
GBP10. Moreover, “PayPass” had 23 million devices circulating for
use at over 95,000 merchant locations with the conclusion of 4Q07.


Citi UK has appointed Bert Pijls to the Organization’s Country Business
Manager to oversee Citi and Egg operations. Relocating from the Czech
Republic as the regional Citi’s Country Business Manager, Pijls has a
record of producing double-digit year-on-year revenue growth, a career
dating back to 1990 as a branch manager, Area Sales and Distribution
Manager in Germany. Hired by Egg in 2001, Pijls was responsible for
Banking Products until 2003, upon taking a position with AmEx UK to
kick-start its lending business across 22 international markets. He returned to Egg in 2005.

ROAA Slips by Nine Basis Points in January

The return on average card assets declined in January by nine basis points and is now 34 basis points below year ago levels. However, the ROAA remains well over levels posted two years ago, according to CardData ([][1]). “Return on Average Assets” is determined by dividing the after-tax return by the average managed card outstandings and then annualizing.

Krungthai Card and JCB International have partnered for the
launch of the “KTC JCB Kakkoii card” to appeal to Japanese
expatriates and tourists, a figure of nearly 1.2 million. With this, the
card will expand card services to tourist-related businesses, will
be promoted with KTC’s 30 million baht marketing campaign (which
hopes to acquire 100,000 card members before 2009), and will
provide membership benefits such as airport lounge access,
restaurant discounts and concierge services across 30 cities worldwide.
Furthermore, company projections foresee monthly spending on the
“KTC JCB Kakkoii card” at nearly 10,000 baht while KTC has over
1.94 million total accounts, 1.46 million of which are outstanding
credit cards.

Union Bank Offers Paypass Debit MasterCards

San Francisco-based Union Bank of California is now offering Mastercard “PayPass” to its customers. Customers tap their “PayPass”-enabled debit cards on a PayPass reader located at the point of sale of participating merchants. For transactions under $25, most merchants don’t require customers to sign a receipt. To signal a customer’s purchase is complete, the reader will flash a light and produce a tone sound. The Union Bank of California Debit MasterCard PayPass card also has a traditional magnetic stripe and can be used anywhere debit MasterCard cards are accepted.
