Through the end of 2010, total payment cards in circulation in U.S. topped 1 billion, reaching 1,008,900,000, not including Discover-issued cards. Of these cards, 488.9 million were credit cards while 520 million were debit cards. Moreover, Visa led the pack with 269 million issued credit cards and 397 million debit cards. A distant second was MasterCard, with 171 million credit cards in circulation and 123 million debit cards in wallets. American Express credit cards in circulation totaled 48.9 million across the US by the end of 2010.
