VeriFone Systems announced an Linux-based POS payment device that integrates a NFC contactless reader. The H5000 runs Linux on an ARM11 processor, offers a 3.5-inch color touchscreen, and supports multiple payment types– including legacy magnetic stripe, EMV smartcards, and contactless cards — with a single hybrid card slot, says the company. VeriFone, which has previously offered Linux-based payment devices such as the MX870, says its new H5000 will be initially aimed at the German market. The device is said to be a successor to the Hypercom Artema Hybrid, which became part of the product line when VeriFone completed its acquisition of Hypercom on Aug. 4.

Visa Canada and HMV introduced Visa payWave contactless payments at HMV’s 116 retail stores, allowing customers to “wave and go” when purchasing from the entertainment retailer. Canadian card holders shopping online at hmvdigital.ca, HMV’s music download store, are now able to purchase items using their Visa Debit card. With Visa Debit, card holders can safely and conveniently pay for purchases made online or through mail and telephone orders, directly from their bank account. Visa payWave is based on EMV chip technology, which uses a standard 128-bit encryption technology, to securely store and encrypt confidential information. Visa Debit allows one-step online electronic debiting of funds without requiring customers to sign in to their bank account, backed by Visa layered security.
Metropolitan Bank partnered Wells Fargo through Uniteller Financial Services to provide remittance claiming from the US. The Philippines received $18.76 billion of remittances in 2010, 8.2% higher than 2009, of which, more than 40% came from the US. Given the statistics, this remittance alliance gives overseas Filipinos, access to over 10,000 locations where they can remit money to the Philippines.
R&D and innovation base Turkcell Teknoloji has won the SIMagine award in the Best Contactless Mobile Transaction (NFC) Awards category. Turkcell “Cep-T Cüzdan” mobile wallet application that enables the secure installation of more than one credit card application on a single SIM card, was a world first developed by Turkcell Teknoloji. The “Cep-T Cüzdan” service makes NFC supported terminals credit cards with the introduction of this application. This lets customers load their MasterCard branded credit cards to their mobile phones and make contact-free transactions for onetime payment of up to TRY35 with no pin or signature.
Roamware mobile roaming and mobile financial services solutions announced FETS (Funds & Electronic Transfer Solutions) mobile payment consortium implemented its “Macalla” mobile financial services platform. With this, FETS also deployed the Roamware “eMoni” mobile payments service using the platform. FETS, a non-bank service provider has recently been awarded a license by the Central Bank of Nigeria to roll out mobile payment services to the banked and vast unbanked segments.
Jim Johnston has been named the Wells Fargo regional president for its Europe Middle East Africa (EMEA) operations effective January 2012. A 28-year veteran of the company, he will be based in London and report to Richard Yorke, head of Wells Fargo’s International Group. Johnston will work with other Wells Fargo business leaders to serve commercial, corporate and financial institution customers in the EMEA region leveraging the company’s global network and expanded capabilities. Johnston was most recently executive VP and chief credit officer responsible for credit and risk for Wells Fargo’s Government & Institutional Banking and Wholesale Counterparty Credit groups.
