Amsterdam-based Gemalto has acquired Rhode Island-based Shoreline and Atlanta, GA-based Source One Direct, two payment card personalization bureaus in the USA.
Gemalto notes that the USA market is moving towards an October, 2015 liability shift which mandates EMV chip technology to replace the older magnetic stripe cards. Last year alone there were over 1.6 billion EMV (chip & PIN) cards in use across the globe and many issuers in the USA are now accelerating their own migration in light of the recent security breaches, e.g. Target, that have occurred with major retailers.
The strategic move reinforces Gemalto’s ability to deliver advanced personalization services to card issuers in the USA and complements its unique expertise in EMV acquired through the unrivaled number of such migrations the Company has deployed around the world.
GA-based Source One Direct, a Cardiff Holdings Company, is a provider of card personalization and fulfillment services across all industries. Combined with sister company, Shoreline Business Solutions, Source One Direct is among the largest independent card personalization and fulfillment organizations in the USA.
RI-based Shoreline expanded its services to include secure cards as customers began transitioning from non-secure ATM cards to Visa and MasterCard branded debit cards. Following receipt of Visa and MasterCard certification in 2000, Shoreline solidified its position in the more profitable secure card market. Since inception, Shoreline has developed a loyal base of over 1,000 customers originally located in the Northeastern United States and now national in scope.
Gemalto specializes in digital security with 2013 annual revenues of €2.4 billion and more than 12,000 employees operating out of 85 offices and 25 research and software development centers, located in 44 countries.
