Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover profits reach nearly $4.5 billion in the second quarter. The profits were driven by a strong dollar and rising cross-border transactions.
New research shows the majority of small- and mid-size businesses (SMEs) already use online banking, and mobile banking is on the rise. Currently 35% of SMEs use a smartphone and 25% use a tablet for business banking.
MasterCard’s Latin America Caribbean region Gross Dollar Volume was up 13.2% to US$88 billion in the second quarter. Based on Purchase Dollar Volume, the area is the fastest growing region for MasterCard.

Interac discovers seven out of 10 students say they would ask their parents to send funds via Interac e-Transfer if they needed it. Students favor exchanging money via Interac e-Transfers because it is instant (81%) and convenient (71%).

Ingenico has been awarded the first certification in France for an m-acceptance (or mobile acceptance) solution by Cartes Bancaires CB Group. M-acceptance consists in combining a payment solution with mainstream mobile equipment such as a smartphone or tablet, using both communication means and ergonomy to provide for embedded management and check-out applications. A transaction viewing portal has been made available to mCommerce retailers by Ingenico Group. Mobile bank card payments have risen significantly over the last few years. Ingenico Group is a pioneer in the m-acceptance sector with its payment solutions initially connected to the GPRS cellular network and more recently to the 3G network.
BPC Bank announced EthSwitch has chosen SmartVista to power its national switching operations. SmartVista was selected because of its comprehensive functionality, advanced technology and proven track record in helping payment businesses worldwide capitalize on opportunities presented by the changing payments landscape. EthSwitch was formed by all the banks in Ethiopia, and with the backing of the Ethiopian Bankers’ Association and the country’s central bank known as the National Bank of Ethiopia. EthSwitch aims to connect all banks to a central transaction switching platform that will provide customers with access to their money and other financial services via any ATM, Point of Sale (POS) device, mobile and Internet channels, regardless of which bank issued their card or in which bank their account is kept.
