The four top U.S. payment networks Gross Dollar Volume (GDV) for credit and debits cards combined for the fourth quarter (Q4/14) will likely rise 6.9% year-on-year (Y/Y) to $1398 billion. Based on current economic and industry metrics, U.S. payment card GDV will approach $1500 billion in Q4/2015.
CardWeb.com’s CardData financial database and forecaster RAM Research expect U.S. payment card spending to continue on a robust trend as the overall economy gains additional strength in 2015.
The four major U.S. payment card networks produced an 8.7% year-on-year (Y/Y) gain in Gross Dollar Volume (GDV) during the third quarter of 2014 (Q3/14). Visa (VS), MasterCard (MC), American Express (AX) and Discover (DS) produced a record $1.299 trillion in U.S. GDV, compared to $1.195 trillion in the year ago quarter.

Based on GDV, VS led the four networks in Y/Y gains in market share for the U.S., gaining 20 basis points (bps) Y/Y. AX gained 10 bps Y/Y and DS was flat in Q3/14. MasterCard declined 30 bps in the third quarter.
At the end of Q3/14, VS remains the U.S. giant with a 58.9% market share, compared to 26.1% for MC, 13.3% for AX and 2.5% for DS, according to CardData.
VS reported a 9.1% Y/Y gain in Q3/14, posting $755 billion in U.S. GDV.
MC posted an 7.6% Y/Y increase in Q3/14 U.S. GDV of $339 billion.
AX Q3/2014 U.S. GDV of $173 billion was up 9.5% over the year ago quarter.
DS showed a 6.7% Y/Y rise in Q3/14 with $32 billion in GDV.
