Morocco’s largest bank Attijariwafa signed a deal with UnionPay International for complete ATM acceptance within the bank’s network. The move will see the local ATM acceptance of UnionPay cards soar to 40%.
Currently, all the merchants in Morocco accept UnionPay cards and the local ATM acceptance is also increasing quickly. As the third largest bank in Africa, Attijariwafa has branches and sub-branches in 11 African countries. Meanwhile, UnionPay provides services to the world’s largest cardholder base and has advantages in network, products and brand.
The latest cooperation will enable all the ATMs under Attijariwafa in Morocco to accept UnionPay cards. Other African countries and regions will also see ATM and merchant acceptance of UnionPay cards as well as UnionPay products that meet local residents’ demands.
As independent travel in Africa becomes more and more popular among young people, UnionPay International is making efforts to expand the local acceptance of UnionPay cards. Currently, UnionPay cards are accepted in over 40 countries and regions in Africa, among which 50% of the ATMs and 30% of the merchants in South Africa accept the UnionPay cards; over 70% of merchants in Mauritius and Kenya accept UnionPay cards, basically covering the places frequently visited by visitors.
Besides, multiple markets in Africa have issued a series of UnionPay products including debit cards, prepaid cards and business cards to enable more and more local cardholders to experience the advantages of UnionPay services.
