While Visa continues to control 70% of the U.S. general purpose debit card market, MasterCard is outpacing Visa in year-on-year (YOY) growth, based on gross dollar volume (GDV), according to CardData. Forecaster RAM Research expects the U.S. V+M market to reach $2575 billion for 2015.
In the first quarter Visa debit grew 5.6% in YOY GDV versus MasterCard’s 7.6% YOY growth rate.
Visa reported $432 billion in Q1/15 debit card GDV, compared to $431 billion in the prior quarter and $409 billion in the year ago quarter.
MasterCard posted $187 billion in Q1/15 debit card GDV, compared to $182 billion in the prior quarter and $187 billion in the year ago quarter.
RAM Research projects Visa’s Q2/15 debit card GDV will come in at $460 billion and MasterCard’s at $192 billion.
