China’s UnionPay has beefed-up “QuickPass” in Taiwan with more than 300 merchants in Jinmen, Matsu and Penghu by a deal inked with Taiwan Cooperative Bank. So far, over 1,000 POS terminals of Taiwan Cooperative Bank can accept UnionPay “QuickPass” in Taiwan.
With the implementation of the Visa on Arrival policy on JMP and since tourists leaving from offshore islands for Taiwan are not subject to the tourist cap, there has been a substantial increase in the number of the tourists to off-shore islands. According to the statistics of Taiwan, more than 830,000 tourists entered JMP via “mini-three-links” in the first half of this year, with year-on-year growth of 34%. In particular, the number of group tourists from the mainland to Penghu in April surpassed the total number of last year.
Conforming to this trend, UnionPay International is dedicated to improving the acceptance environment in Taiwan and speeding up to launch innovative payments in Taiwan by taking advantage of its network, products and technologies. Extending the acceptance of UnionPay “QuickPass” to JMP provides more convenient payment for “cross-strait one-day life circle” which is built by UnionPay International and over a hundred local merchants. Regarding the “cross-strait one-day life circle”, UnionPay cardholders can enjoy round trips between the mainland and Jinmen within one day, especially for leisure trips from coastal cities like Xiamen, Quanzhou and Fuzhou. The cardholders are entitled to exclusive UnionPay offers covering all aspects of life.
Taiwan Cooperative Bank is not only the first acquirer in Taiwan that conducted chip modification for its UnionPay card acceptance terminals, but also the first local organization to provide UnionPay “QuickPass” service. Up till now, more than 1,000 POS terminals of Taiwan Cooperative Bank accept “QuickPass”, including those well-known chain stores like Kingstone Bookstore, Kamalan Bus, Kodomoshops as well as Taipei Leechi and Pineapple Cake from Dawncake favored by the tourists.
UnionPay “QuickPass” is an innovative chip product with contactless payment function, which enables “tap and go” in the sensor zone of contactless terminals. Cardholders no longer need to go through complicated payment procedures. Since cardholders make purchases frequently during their trips in Taiwan, no limit is set on card balance and single purchase volume with regard to UnionPay “QuickPass”. Thanks to UnionPay chip technologies, payment is protected by multiple security guarantees. Furthermore, cardholders still make signatures or password verification after tapping their cards. Compared with barcode scanning settlement, UnionPay “QuickPass” is convenient and safe and requires neither Wi-Fi nor international roaming.
In addition, UnionPay International and Taiwan Cooperative Bank also cooperate to launch exclusive privileges for UnionPay cardholders in over 100 merchants. For instance, the discount up to 50% can be enjoyed by cardholders who stay for several nights on a roll at Hetian Hotel in Penghu. Free accommodation is offered to cardholders of UnionPay platinum cards and diamond cards for the fourth night; Cardholders that purchase pearl, coral and other gifts in Penghu Wish Paradise, UnionPay can enjoy not only 20% discount but also pearl gifts.
