Global purchase transactions (PTX) for Visa and MasterCard debit and credit cards, excluding Visa Europe, soared 12.6% year-on-year (YOY) in the second quarter (Q2/15) and 8.6% sequentially. MasterCard continues to drive the market with an 17.4% YOY gain in PTX, compared with Visa’s 11.0% YOY PTX gain.


U.S. cash dollar volume (CDV) for Visa and MasterCard debit and credit cards rose 5.2% year-on-year (YOY) in the second quarter (Q2/15) and 5.2% sequentially. MasterCard racked up an 8.0% YOY gain, compared to Visa’s 4.1% gain, driven by MasterCard’s aggressive prepaid push.


Visa’s (VS) Central Europe – Middle East – Africa (CEMEA) region Gross Dollar Volume (GDV) FX-adjusted hit the brakes in the second quarter to a year-on-year (YOY) gain of 7.1%, compared to 12.4% in the prior quarter and 12.8% in the year ago quarter.

NASA Star Trek Cards

NASA Federal Credit Union announced the pending launch of a series of Star Trek credit cards. The Star Trek credit cards, under license by CBS Consumer Products, will provide unique rewards of Star Trek merchandise and experiences – in addition to the outstanding value of the current NASA Federal Credit Union Platinum Advantage Rewards credit card program.

Today’s loyalty programs need to strengthen interactions with the customer and increase loyalty by enabling enhanced services and rewards, such as: real-time customer identification in-store to enable guided selling; customized rewards based on customer preferences; and gamification to engage customers and encourage social interaction.

EMV Awareness

A majority of small business owners are unaware of the impending EM liability shift coming in October. Less than half of small business owners who accept point-of-sale card payments today report being aware of the October 1 liability shift, the date when a card issuer or merchant that does not support EMV chip card technology will assume liability for any fraudulent point-of-sale card transactions.
