Gross or open accounts (GAC) for U.S. credit cards among the nation’s four largest issuers climbed 2.0% in the second quarter to 187.4 million, compared to 183.7 million one-year ago. The growth is driven by Capital One, while Chase, Bank of America (BofA) and Citibank face year-on-year (YOY) and quarter-to-quarter (QOQ) GAC erosion. However, BofA posted a slight YOY gain.

Gemalto & DNA

Gemalto has been selected by the Debit Network Alliance (DNA), a consortium of leading U.S. debit network providers, to deliver EMV consulting services. Gemalto’s EMV Allynis Consulting Services are designed to accelerate the deployment of EMV, significantly reducing time between DNA’s business plan and go-to-market. Gemalto’s consultants recommended and executed a strategy that details card, terminal and personalization requirements. 

Green Dot & PayPal

Green Dot announced a new cash processing technology enabling customers to securely and conveniently add cash to their accounts at participating retailers using their mobile device. This service leverages Green Dot’s new mobile and web-enabled barcode generation system and thousands of Green Dot retail locations to provide a new cash-loading option.

Cash vs M-Payments

The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) has released a new research paper, “U.S. Mobile Payments: Do They Disrupt Cash?” which examines the impact of mobile payments on the growth of cash. Despite all the attention it receives, mobile payments still account for only a very small fraction of retail in-store payments.
