Cognitec Systems was founded in 2002 by a team of experts who recognized the growing need for software and hardware solutions in the field of biometrics. Our founders have been working on algorithms for the FaceVACS face recognition technology since 1995. Starting in 1996, government and industry customers have relied on the FaceVACS technology for a wide range of applications.
The development of our products and the growth of our company build on the extensive knowledge of our scientists and software engineers and their continuing dedication to deliver the best performance available on the market. We also offer consulting services and excellent technical support.
Cognitec currently employs nearly 60 staff members. Our headquarters are located in Dresden, Germany. We opened sales and support offices in the United States and Australia.
Chief Executive Officer
Alfredo Herrera has spearheaded the design and development of the FaceVACS system since 1995. As a software engineer at Siemens, he participated in the development of neurocomputer software, OCR algorithms and, eventually, face recognition applications. As head of the biometrics development team at plettac electronics security GmbH, he was responsible for the ongoing development of the FaceVACS technology. On this basis he founded Cognitec in May 2002.
Dr. Jürgen Pampus
Vice President Sales and Marketing
Jürgen Pampus held positions at Control Data Corp. before joining the scientific computing department at Siemens. After pioneering the development of neurocomputing products and successfully introducing them to the market, he started the Siemens biometrics department in 1995 and initiated the development and international sales of the FaceVACS technology. Dr. Pampus’ expert knowledge and opinions regularly contribute to biometric working groups and publications; he has given presentations at various international biometrics conferences. Dr. Pampus also serves on the Biometrics Institute Board of Directors. He is a co-founder of Cognitec.
Senior Business Development Executive, Cognitec Systems Corporation
Roger Kelesoglu joined Cognitec Systems Corporation in 2003 as Business Development Executive for North America, Canada and Mexico. He brings to Cognitec Systems his lifelong experience working for several high-tech Fortune 500 companies in various business management positions, including Unisys, Hewlett Packard, Polaroid and Viisage. Mr. Kelesoglu speaks several foreign languages and has held management positions in Europe, Latin America, the Far East and Middle East.
Director Asia Pacific
Stephen Meltz currently fills the position of Director Asia Pacific for Cognitec Systems Pty Ltd. In this capacity he is responsible for all business operations and business development throughout the Asia Pacific region. Prior to joining Cognitec Systems, Mr. Meltz held several senior executive positions in both public and private companies, including L1 Identity Solutions Inc. and L3 Communications Inc. In the late 90s he was responsible for pioneering the fully automated checked baggage screening equipment at all major airports in Australia and Asia.
Dr. Thorsten Thies
Director Algorithm Development
After receiving his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Karlsruhe (KIT), Dr. Thorsten Thies joined Cognitec in 2003. Since then he has made numerous contributions in advancing Cognitec’s core technology, mainly in the areas of face detection and face recognition. He has been leading the algorithm development team at Cognitec since 2015.
Director Software Development
Michael Müller started his career in software development at the Dresden Frauenhofer Gesellschaft, Institute for Integrated Circuits. Starting at Siemens in 1995, he has acted as principal software architect and developer for the FaceVACS technology and innovative face recognition applications. He is a co-founder of Cognitec.
Dr. Jürgen Richter
Dr. Jürgen Richter started his professional career as a Scientific Assistant at the Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz), and then developed radiation planning software for radio-oncology at the Klinikum Chemnitz hospital. In 1996, he joined the FaceVACS development team at Siemens as a senior software engineer, and later co-founded Cognitec.
