Qatar’s Doha Bank and China UnionPay inked a deal for the issuance of the first UnionPay card. Doha Bank, holding one-fourth market share, is one of the top merchant acquirers in Qatar.
Doha Bank has issued various kinds of bank cards locally and it enjoys obvious market advantages. Prior to such cooperation, all merchants and ATMs of Doha Bank already accept UnionPay cards.
This time, UnionPay International and Doha Bank agreed to issue UnionPay cards, including UnionPay debit cards, credit cards and prepaid cards among others. As international payment cards, UnionPay cards can be conveniently used in the UnionPay acceptance network in over 150 countries and regions. In particular, UnionPay cards can be used in all ATMs and POS terminals within the territory of China, which is beneficial for the communication and exchange between Qatar and China or other regions in the world.
Currently, cardholders can use UnionPay cards at more than 50% of POS terminals and nearly 40% of ATMs in Qatar, covering department stores, duty free shops, hotels, restaurants and other places frequently visited by tourists. In the Middle East, 11 countries have launched UnionPay card business, namely, UAE, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Turkey, Oman, Yemen, Iraq, Qatar and Israel. In particular, all POS terminals in UAE can accept UnionPay cards and the full coverage of ATMs will be realized within this year. The acceptance scope of UnionPay cards in Turkey and Israel is also being expanded.
