Chinese tourists are flocking to the Czech Republic and the transaction volume of UnionPay cards in the Czech Republic has achieved a year-on-year growth of over 100% in the first three quarters of this year. Over 90% of duty-free shops at Prague Airport, the biggest international airport in the Czech Republic, accept UnionPay cards.
UnionPay’s coverage rates of ATMs and merchants in the Czech Republic are expected to at least double by the end of next year.
Currently, cardholders can not only pay with UnionPay cards in over 6000 merchants, including duty-free shops, department stores, tourist attractions and other places most visited by tourists, but also use UnionPay cards to withdraw cash at over 20% ATMs locally. ATMs with logos of UnionPay, KB or Euronet all accept UnionPay cards.
On September 23, Hainan Airlines opened the direct flight between Beijing and Prague for the first time, which shortened the flight time between the capitals to about 11 hours. With this direct flight, the Czech Republic becomes the third country in Central and Eastern Europe which has a non-stop flight to China, second only to Poland and Hungary, and the tourism between the two countries will be booming.
In fact, the trade cooperation and personnel exchange between China and the Czech Republic have become increasingly frequent. In the past five years, the number of Chinese tourists visiting the Czech Republic has increased by three times, and is expected to reach 300,000 by the end of this year, taking up 40% of all the Chinese tourists visiting the 16 countries in Central and Eastern Europe. In addition, the spending of Chinese tourists in the Czech Republic has witnessed a rapid increase. According to Globe Blue, Chinese tourists became the group of foreign tourists with the maximum spending in the Czech Republic in June this year.
UnionPay cards can be used in over 150 countries and regions overseas, 38 of them are in Europe. Almost all the ATMs in Great Britain, Switzerland and Austria accept UnionPay cards, and most of the 16 countries in Central and Eastern Europe have started to accept UnionPay cards, with merchants accepting UnionPay cards covering the places most frequented by tourists.
