Jordan’s International Cards Company (ICC) has inked a deal to issue UnionPay cards next year. This is the first UnionPay card in Jordan.
According to the agreement, the two parties will issue UnionPay cards in Jordan covering a variety of UnionPay card products including credit cards, business cards, and prepaid cards, and all of which are multi-currency cards supporting Jordanian dinar, US dollar and CNY.
Previously, UnionPay International has cooperated with the biggest local acquirer EMP (Emerging Markets Payments Group), in enabling all ATMs and 65% merchants in Jordan to accept UnionPay cards. The two parties have furthered their cooperation recently, agreeing to 1) enable all EMP’s POS terminals in Jordan to accept UnionPay chip cards by the end of next February; 2) promote UnionPay card acceptance at EMP’s terminals in other markets in the Middle East.
UnionPay card services have been launched in 11 countries and regions in the Middle East, including Jordan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Turkey, Oman, Yemen, Iraq, Qatar, and Israel. In the UAE, UnionPay cards are accepted at all POS terminals and full coverage of ATMs will be realized within the year; in Turkey, Israel and other aforementioned countries, UnionPay card acceptance coverage also keeps expanding.
