Tokyo-based Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Club is now the exclusive issuer and acquirer of Diners Club cards in Japan for Discover Financial Services’ Diners Club International.
In March, it was announced that SuMi TRUST agreed to acquire the Japanese Diners Club franchise and be responsible for both the Diners Club Japan brand and the business of issuing and acquiring in Japan.
Discover Global Network is the third largest payments network in the world and the largest merchant acceptance network in Asia-Pacific.
Gross dollar volume (GDV) for licensees of Discover-owned Diners Club International declined 3.0% year-on-year (YOY) in the third quarter of 2015 to $6.56 billion. Over the past five quarters Diners GDV ranged between $6.47 billion and $6.93 billion.
After peaking at $7.2 billion in 4Q/12, the international charge card has experienced a substantial softening in quarterly gross volume. Acquired by Discover Financial Services in July 2008, the international payment card’s GDV high for 2014 was $6.93 billion in the year ago quarter.
So far in 2015 Diners Club has inked a deal with Elo, the largest Brazilian credit card brand, to allow acceptance of Elo Global Cards for international purchases and cash access outside of Brazil on the Discover Global Network, which includes Discover Network, Diners Club International and the PULSE network.
Creditcall, a payment gateway provider and EMV migration specialist, and Discover’s Diners Club inked an agreement to expand the acceptance of Diners Club cards worldwide.
Lugano-based Cornèr Bank inked a deal to acquire Diners Club Italia and Dinit from Discover Financial Services. Diners Club Italia is the Diners Club International licensee for Italy, San Marino and Vatican City and Dinit is a Diners Club card transaction processor in Slovenia.
Discover’s Diners Club International signed a deal to further grow Discover card acceptance in the UK and Europe. The contract with The Logic Group offers services based on supporting Omnichannel customer interactions whether managed payments or loyalty solutions and integrating these to provide customer insights.
