UnionPay International says its credit cards would now be accepted at all FamilyMart stores in Japan.
Now, all the three major chain convenience stores in Japan, namely Lawson, 7-ELEVEn and FamilyMart, accept UnionPay cards and allow for easy PIN-free payment which is widely adopted at local convenience stores.
According to data released, nearly 5 million Chinese tourists visited Japan last year, up over one time year on year. With an average spending of 16,000 Yuan per person, Chinese tourists outstrip tourists from all other countries in terms of spending. Convenience store is a must-visit for tourists who want to experience local life in Japan, and an increasing number of merchants take UnionPay card acceptance as an important means to attract tourists.
Through this cooperation, FamilyMart not only has enabled UnionPay card acceptance at nearly 12,000 FamilyMart stores, but also has enabled the ATMs in stores most frequented by tourists to accept UnionPay cards. ATM acceptance of UnionPay cards will gradually expand to all FamilyMart stores.
Currently in all the three major chain convenient stores in Japan, namely FamilyMart, Lawson and 7-ELEVEn, cardholders can pay without PIN or signature with UnionPay credit cards for purchases less than 10,000 yen; when spending 10,000 yen or more, cardholders can make payment without PIN. The adoption of these payment methods in conformity to local residents’ card-using habit not only represents the improvement of UnionPay’s acceptance footprint and service ability, but also helps UnionPay gain a foothold for developing localized business in the future.
Currently, UnionPay card payment has occupied the largest market share of total card spending by foreign tourists in Japan. Not only the Chinese, but also residents in several countries and regions, including Hong Kong and South Korea, are used to paying with UnionPay card, and UnionPay transactions made by residents from these overseas countries and regions witnessed a rapid growth in Japan. Now, UnionPay cards are accepted at nearly 80,000 ATMs and about 400,000 merchants in Japan. UnionPay’s acceptance footprint covers major cities like Tokyo and Osaka, and is expanding to second- and third-tier cities, including several merchant categories such as accommodation, traffic, catering and entertainment.
During the upcoming Spring Festival, a large number of Chinese tourists are expected to visit Japan. To better serve them, UnionPay International joins hands with many local merchants in launching special UnionPay offers.
