International payment cards-in-force (CIF) for Visa and MasterCard increased 6.7% year-on-year (YOY) in the first quarter (1Q/16). International debit card CIF rose 8.9% YOY, while international credit card CIF increased 3.5% YOY.
MasterCard’s international debit card CIF YOY is growing more than seven times Visa’s international debit CIF.
International payment card CIF at the end of 1Q/16 posted at 2892 million, compared to 2855 in the prior quarter, and 2611 million for the year ago quarter.
International credit card CIF at the end of 1Q/16 posted at 1154 million, compared to 1147 in the prior quarter, and 1115 million for the year ago quarter.
International debit card CIF at the end of 1Q/16 posted at 1738 million, compared to 1708 in the prior quarter, and 1596 million for the year ago quarter.
Visa’s international payment card CIF at the end of 1Q/16 rose 3.2% YOY to an estimated 1682 million from 1671 million for 4Q/15 and 1630 million for 1Q/15.
Visa’s international credit card CIF at the end of 1Q/16 rose 3.7% YOY to an estimated 566 million from 561 million for 4Q/15 and 546 million for 1Q/15.
Visa’s international debit card CIF at the end of 1Q/16 rose 3.0% YOY to an estimated 1116 million from 1110 million for 4Q/15 and 1084 million for 1Q/15.
MasterCard’s international payment card CIF at the end of 1Q/16 rose 11.9% YOY to 1210 million from 1184 million for 4Q/15 and 1081 million for 1Q/15.
MasterCard’s international credit card CIF at the end of 1Q/16 rose 3.3% YOY to 588 million from 586 million for 4Q/15 and 569 million for 1Q/15.
MasterCard’s international debit card CIF at the end of 1Q/16 soared 21.5% YOY to 622 million from 598 million for 4Q/15 and 512 million for 1Q/15.
Among Visa’s four international regions CIF for 4Q/15 Asia Pacific was up 6.4% YOY to an estimated 848 million; Canada rose 4.1% YOY to an estimated 51 million; CEMEA edged up 0.3% YOY to an estimated 322 million; and LAC was flat YOY at an estimated 452 million.
Among MasterCard’s four international regions CIF for 4Q/15 APMEA was up 15.1% YOY to 555 million; Canada was flat YOY to 49 million; Europe gained 9.6% YOY to 410 million; and LAC increased 10.3% to 172 million.
