Total Visa and Mastercard processed or switched transactions (TX) in the first quarter (1Q/17) rebounded above year-on-year (YOY) growth rates of the past three years. Mastercard, is growing significantly higher YOY with a 500 basis points (bps) gap over Visa in 1Q/17, discounting the addition of Visa Europe in the third quarter of last year.\, according to CardData.
Combined Visa and Mastercard processed 40,956 million transactions in 1Q/17, representing an 31.9% YOY gain, including Visa Europe, the adjusted* gain was 13.6% YOY. For the prior quarter, the two networks posted 42,529 million transactions, an all-time high, and compared to 31,076 million transactions one-year ago.
The YOY aggregate gains of the two networks for processed or switched transactions rose from 12.0% in 1Q/14, to 11.0% in 1Q/15, 9.9% for 1Q/16, and 13.6% for 1Q/17.
Visa’s processed transactions for 1Q/17 were up 42.1% YOY or adjusted* 12% YOY, compared to 43.9% YOY, or adjusted* 13% YOY, in 4Q/16, and 8.8% YOY for 1Q/16.
Visa reported 26,256 million transactions for the first quarter, compared to 27,329 million for the prior quarter, and 18,475 million for the year ago quarter.
For 1Q/15 Visa reported 16,980 million transactions and for 1Q/14 15,354 transactions.
Mastercard’s processed transactions for 1Q/17 were up 16.7% YOY, compared to 17.2% YOY in 4Q/16, and 14.2% YOY for 1Q/16.
Mastercard reported 14,700 million transactions for the first quarter, compared to 15,200 million for the prior quarter, and 12,601 million for the year ago quarter.
For 1Q/15 Mastercard reported 11,035 million transactions and for 1Q/14 9,849 transactions.
