U.S. credit cards-in-force (CIF) among the Top 4 U.S. issuers slowed up in 2018, growing 2.7% year-on-year (YOY), compared to 4.8% in the prior year. For the fourth quarter (4Q/18) and among the Top 4 U.S issuers there were an estimated 228.2 million credit U.S. CIF, compared to 226.3 million in 3Q/18, and 222.3 million for 4Q/17, according to figures collected by CardData.
Chase led the peer group, driven by the popularity of its rewards and cobranded credit card products. Capital One, former peer group leader, growth has been slowing over the past five quarters as it tightens it sub-prime credit card underwriting offset partially by the popularity of its rewards programs, according to analysis by RAM Research.

Chase (JPM) U.S. credit CIF jumped 5.0% YOY for 4Q/18 at 81.4 million, compared to 80.4 million in the prior quarter, and 77.5 million one-year ago.
Capital One (COF) U.S. credit CIF was up 2.0% YOY for 4Q/18 at 56.3 million, compared to 56.0 million in the prior quarter, and 55.2 million for 4Q/17.
Bank of America (BAC) U.S. credit CIF inched upward 1.3% YOY for 4Q/18 at 47.4 million, compared to 47.0 million in the prior quarter, and 46.8 million one year ago.
Citibank (C) U.S. credit CIF was slightly increased for 4Q/18 at 43.1 million, compared to 42.9 million in the prior quarter, and 42.8 million for 4Q/17. Citibank, the nation’s fourth largest issuer, U.S. gross accounts increased 0.9% YOY from a reported 34.2 million U.S. accounts in 4Q/17 to a reported 34.5 million in 4Q/18 and 34.3 million for 3Q/18. For 4Q/15 Citibank had a reported 23.7 million accounts.
Visa & Mastercard CIF
The 4Q/18 U.S. credit card CIF for Visa and Mastercard were up 3.4% YOY, compared to 2.9% YOY in the prior quarter. Visa and Mastercard reported 570 million credit CIF for 4Q/18, compared to 558 million for 3Q/18 and 551 million for 4Q/17.
