First-quarter U.S. Visa Mastercard credit and debit cards-in-force (CIF) increased 6.7% year-on-year (YOY), compared to a 6.1% YOY gain in payment cards for the prior quarter (4Q/18). Visa and Mastercard U.S. credit cards increased 5.5% YOY while CIF for debit cards rose 7.7% YOY, in 1Q/19.
There are were 1377 million Visa and Mastercard payment cards in circulation in the U.S. at the end of 1Q/19, compared to 1356 million for 4Q/18 and 1290 million for 1Q/18. Since the first-quarter of 2015, Visa and Mastercard have added 233 million payment CIF, according to tabulations by CardData.
2019 Visa and Mastercard CIF Outlook
Based on a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.74% since 2015, U.S. Visa and Mastercard payment CIF should top 1440 million by the end-of-year (EOY) 2019. Visa and Mastercard payment CIF grew 6.7% in 2018, compared to 1.8% EOY 2017, 8.0% EOY 2016 and 2.5% EOY 2015, according to analysis by RAM Research.
Mastercard is currently leading the growth in U.S. credit card CIF YOY by 1190 basis points (bps), while Visa is leading debit card growth by 310 bps.
Visa + Mastercard U.S. Credit & Debit Cards
The 1Q/19 U.S. credit card CIF for both networks was up 5.5% YOY, compared to 3.4% YOY in the prior quarter. Visa and Mastercard reported 576 million credit CIF for 1Q/19, compared to a revised 571 million for 4Q/18 and revised 546 million for 1Q/18. For the first-quarter of 2015 there were 500 million Visa and Mastercard credit CIF.
The 1Q/19 U.S. debit card CIF for both networks increased 7.7%, compared to 8.1% YOY in 4Q/18. Visa and Mastercard reported 801 million debit CIF, compared to a revised 785 million for 4Q/18 and a revised 744 million for 1Q/18. For the first-quarter of 2015 there were 644 million Visa and Mastercard debit CIF.
Visa U.S. Payment Cards
Visa U.S. credit cards had an estimated 0.9% YOY gain in CIF for 1Q/19, compared to a slight decrease of 0.3% for 4Q/18. Visa had an estimated 338 million credit CIF in the first-quarter, compared to a reported 337 million for the prior quarter, and a revised 335 million for the year ago quarter. (Visa reports CIF on a one-quarter delay.) For the first-quarter of 2015 there were 318 million Visa credit CIF.
Visa U.S. debit cards had an estimated boost of 8.5% YOY gain in the first-quarter, compared to a 7.9% YOY gain in CIF for 4Q/18. Visa had an estimated 585 million debit CIF, compared to a reported 575 million for the prior quarter, and a revised 539 million for the year ago quarter. For the first-quarter of 2015 there were 471 million Visa debit CIF.
Mastercard U.S. Payment Cards
Mastercard U.S. credit cards posted a 12.8% YOY in credit CIF for the first-quarter, compared to 9.5% YOY gain in credit CIF for 4Q/18. Mastercard reported 238 million credit CIF million for 1Q/19, compared to a revised 234 million for the prior quarter, and a revised 211 million for the year ago quarter. For the first-quarter of 2015 there were 182 million Mastercard credit CIF.
Mastercard U.S. debit cards posted a 5.4% YOY gain for 1Q/19 debit CIF, compared a 8.5% YOY gain in CIF for 4Q/18. Mastercard reported 216 million debit CIF, compared to a revised 210 million for the prior quarter, and a revised 205 million for the year ago quarter. For the first-quarter of 2015 there were 173 million Mastercard debit CIF.
