International card PTX (payment transactions) for Visa and Mastercard credit/charge and debit/prepaid cards grew by 12.5% year-on-year (YOY) in the first-quarter (1Q/19), compared to 21.5% YOY for 1Q/18.
International PTX for credit/charge cards increased 3.2% YOY in the first-quarter of 2019, compared to 20.4% YOY for the prior year. International PTX for debit cards rose 21.0% YOY in 1Q/19, compared to 22.5% YOY for 2018. (International data exclude the U.S. market.)
In the first-quarter gross international payment (credit + charge + debit +prepaid) card PTX for Visa and Mastercard came in at 42.15 billion, compared to 44.0 billion for the prior quarter and 37.47 billion in the year ago quarter. In the first-quarter of 2015 Visa and Mastercard posted 17.21 billion international payment card PTX including 10.71 billion credit/charge card transactions and 6.50 billion debit/prepaid transactions, according to figures gathered by CardData.
Purchase transactions for Visa and Mastercard payment cards is growing at a four-year CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 25.10%, while credit/charge card PTX is running at a 14.71% CAGR and debit/prepaid card PTX is increasing by a 38.07% CAGR, based on analysis by RAM Research.
Average International Purchase Transactions
The average purchase transaction for international payment cards combined for the first-quarter is US$44.03, compared to US$44.00 for the prior quarter.
For 1Q/19 international credit/charge card PTX for Visa and Mastercard came in at 18.54 billion, compared to 19.53 billion for the prior quarter and 17.97 billion in the year ago quarter.
The average purchase transaction for international credit/charge cards was US$62.61 for 1Q/19, compared to US$80.01 for 4Q/18.
For the first-quarter international debit/prepaid card PTX for Visa and Mastercard came in at 23.61 billion, compared to 24.49 billion for the prior quarter and 19.51 billion in the year ago quarter.
The average purchase transaction for international debit/prepaid cards is US$29.44, compared to US$29.91 in the prior quarter.
Visa International Purchase Transactions
Visa’s 1Q/19 international credit/charge card PTX declined 5.6% YOY. Visa reported international credit/charge card PTX of 9.93 billion, compared to 10.5 billion for 4Q/18 and 10.52 billion for 1Q/18.
Visa’s 1Q/19 international debit/prepaid card PTX rose 16.5% YOY. Visa reported international debit card PTX of 15.29 billion for 1Q/19, compared to 16.01 billion for 4Q/18 and 13.12 billion for 1Q/18.
Mastercard International Purchase Transactions
Mastercard’s 1Q/19 international credit/charge card PTX rose 16.4% YOY. Mastercard reported international credit/charge card PTX of 8.61 billion, compared to 9.01 billion for 4Q/18 and 7.45 billion for 1Q/18.
Mastercard’s 1Q/19 international debit/prepaid card PTX rose 30.2% YOY. Mastercard reported international debit card PTX of 8.32 billion, compared to 8.48 billion for 4Q/18 and 6.39 billion for 1Q/18.
Mastercard continues its international leadership in debit and prepaid cards both on a YOY and CAGR basis soaring more than 30% YOY nearly twice Visa’s growth and the driving force behind the debit/prepaid CAGR of more than 38%, notes Robert McKinley, Senior Analyst of CardData, CardFlash, and CardTrak.
