Visa Mastercard payment cards (credit, charge, debit, and prepaid) cards-in-force (CIF) in the U.S., for the second-quarter (2Q/19) posted an increase of 8.3% year-on-year (YOY), compared to a 6.7% YOY gain in payment cards for the prior quarter (1Q/19). Visa and Mastercard U.S. credit cards increased 5.0% YOY, while CIF for debit cards rose 10.9% YOY, in 2Q/19.
There were 1378 million Visa and Mastercard payment cards in circulation in the U.S. at the end of 2Q/19, compared to a revised 1364 million for 1Q/19 and a revised 1272 million for 2Q/18. Since the second-quarter of 2015, Visa and Mastercard have added 216 million payment CIF, according to tabulations by CardData.
U.S. Payment Cards Analysis
Based on a current compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.35% since 2015, U.S. Visa and Mastercard payment CIF should top 1430 million by the end-of-year (EOY) 2019. Visa and Mastercard payment CIF grew 6.7% in 2018, compared to 1.8% EOY 2017, and 8.0% EOY 2016 and 2.5% EOY 2015, according to analysis by RAM Research.
Mastercard dominates the growth in U.S. credit/charge cards with a YOY gain of 11.4%, while Visa dominates U.S. debit/prepaid cards with a 12.7% YOY increase, over the second-quarter of last year, notes Robert McKinley, pro bono Senior Analyst for CardFlash, CardData, and CardTrak.
Visa + Mastercard U.S. Credit & Debit Cards
The 2Q/19 U.S. credit card CIF for both networks was up 5.0% YOY, compared to 5.5% YOY in the prior quarter. Visa and Mastercard reported 571 million credit CIF for 2Q/19, compared to a revised 566 million for 1Q/19 and revised 544 million for 2Q/18. For the second-quarter of 2015 there were 512 million Visa and Mastercard credit CIF. Visa and Mastercard U.S. credit cards are currently growing at a 2.76% CAGR.
The 2Q/19 U.S. debit card CIF for both networks increased 10.9%, compared to 7.7% YOY in 1Q/19. Visa and Mastercard reported 807 million debit CIF, compared to a revised 798 million for 1Q/19 and a revised 728 million for 2Q/18. For the second-quarter of 2015 there were 650 million Visa and Mastercard debit CIF. Visa and Mastercard U.S. debit cards are currently growing at a 5.56% CAGR.
Visa U.S. Payment Cards
Visa U.S. credit cards had an estimated 0.9% YOY gain in CIF for 2Q/19, compared to the same for 1Q/19. Visa had an estimated 336 million credit CIF in the second-quarter, compared to a reported 336 million for the prior quarter, and a revised 333 million for the year ago quarter. (Visa reports CIF on a one-quarter delay.) For the second-quarter of 2015 there were 323 million Visa credit CIF. Visa U.S. credit cards are currently growing at a 0.99% CAGR.
Visa U.S. debit cards had an estimated boost of 12.7% YOY gain in the second-quarter, compared to a 8.5% YOY gain in CIF for 1Q/19. Visa had an estimated 586 million debit CIF, compared to a reported 581 million for the prior quarter, and a revised 520 million for the year ago quarter. For the second-quarter of 2015 there were 476 million Visa debit CIF. Visa U.S. debit cards are currently growing at a 5.33% CAGR.
Mastercard U.S. Payment Cards
Mastercard U.S. credit cards posted a 11.4% YOY in credit CIF for the second-quarter, compared to 12.8% YOY gain in credit CIF for 1Q/19. Mastercard reported 235 million credit CIF million for 2Q/19, compared to a revised 230 million for the prior quarter, and a revised 211 million for the year ago quarter. For the second-quarter of 2015 there were 185 million Mastercard credit CIF. Mastercard U.S. credit cards are currently growing at a 6.16% CAGR.
Mastercard U.S. debit cards posted a 6.3% YOY gain for 2Q/19 debit CIF, compared a 5.4% YOY gain in CIF for 1Q/19. Mastercard reported 221 million debit CIF, compared to a revised 217 million for the prior quarter, and a revised 200 million for the year ago quarter. For the second-quarter of 2015 there were 174 million Mastercard debit CIF. Mastercard U.S. debit cards are currently growing at a 6.16% CAGR.
