DISH today announced that it will become the largest company to accept bitcoin. As the first subscription model pay-TV provider to make this move, DISH will begin accepting bitcoin payments from customers starting in the third quarter. DISH has selected Coinbase as the payment processor for bitcoin transactions with customers who choose to pay their bill online with the bitcoin wallet of their choice. DISH will use Coinbase’s Instant Exchange™ feature to exchange bitcoin payments to U.S. dollars at the moment of the transaction.
JCB continues to press on to reach the 200 countries and territories milestone this year with its Card Acceptance Network. The latest is its expansion into Belgium via Worldline. JCB International (JCBI) has formally signed a License Agreement with Atos’ Worldline for building a JCB card acceptance network and to start JCB merchant acquiring operations in Belgium.
Virtual Piggy, Inc.this morning announced it has partnered with international payment service provider, GlobalCollect. GlobalCollect is the most knowledgeable global payment service provider in the world, processing international e-commerce payments for many of the world’s most recognized e-commerce brands in the travel, retail and video game industries, including Levi’s, Sony BMG, Estee Lauder and Valve. The company processes payments in more than 150 currencies in over 170 countries.
Compass Plus has announced that Kenya Commercial Bank, one of the largest banks in the country, has launched its in-house processing centre built on TranzWare products from Compass Plus. Kenya Commercial Bank set out to replace its entire retail banking system, previously built on separate solutions from different providers, to one fully integrated platform that would improve the bank’s efficiency, increase performance, provide flexibility and be fault-tolerant.
CardLinx is forming the CardLinx Europe Council and the CardLinx Canada Council. The upcoming charter meetings will bring together senior executives from the most influential companies in card-linking from each region. Card-linking, a phenomenon gaining popularity worldwide, enables consumers to redeem deals without paper coupons or promo codes and gives merchants a real measure of their ad spend effectiveness. CardLinx’s regional councils will engage two of the largest card-linked markets in establishing global standards for the industry.
TSYS announced that it has further extended its relationship with KBC Bank Ireland (KBC), to support the bank’s credit card launch in the Irish market. TSYS currently provides debit payment services for KBC. KBC has been operating in Ireland for 40 years and is part of KBC Bank NV, one of Europe’s largest banks. KBC provides business and personal banking services to customers in Ireland.

Paragon Application Systems, a leading, independent provider of ePayment testing solutions, announces that it has received Discover D-Payment Application (D-PAS) qualification for its FASTest host testing solution. QA and developers rely on Paragon FASTest for complete simulation and testing of over 114 financial message formats. Acquirers and issuers certifying their transaction processing with Discover and Diners Club can now choose FASTest for host certification.
WEX Inc. announced it has signed a multi-year extension to provide private label and universal fleet card services for Phillips 66. Through the agreement, WEX will continue to issue fleet cards and provide related payment services to Phillips 66-branded customers.
The number of Cards-In-Force (CIF) for the four major global payment card networks (excluding Visa Europe, CUP and JCB) rose 6.5% year-on-year (Y/Y) during the first quarter of 2014 (Q1/14). Visa (VS), MasterCard (MC), American Express (AX) and Discover (DS) reported 3694 million global CIF at the end of Q1/14, compared to 3469 million one year ago.
MasterCard today announced enhancements to its industry leading security efforts, providing U.S. cardholders with greater protection from fraud and identity theft. All MasterCard credit, debit, prepaid and small business cards issued in the U.S. will now carry Identity Theft Resolution assistance. The program provides help in canceling missing cards and alerting credit reporting agencies, as well as targeting searches to detect if stolen personal and confidential data appears online.
UnionPay International (UPI) signed a cooperation agreement in Shanghai with Leumi Card to begin the acceptance of UnionPay cards by merchants and ATMs in Israel. Leumi Card is the first cooperative acquirer of UnionPay International in Israel, providing access to over 40,000 merchants covering nearly all places frequently visited by tourists, and about 360 ATMs across Israel. Bank Leumi has about a 30% market share in Israel.
