The Conference Board LEI for Spain declined in April for a six-month change in the index to now stand at -0.6 percent (about a -1.3 percent annual rate) in the period ending April 2011, down from -0.4 percent (about a -0.7 percent annual rate) during the previous six months. In addition, the weaknesses among the leading indicators have been widespread in recent months. The Conference Board CEI for Spain, a measure of current economic activity, remained unchanged in April, following a slight increase in March. Between October 2010 and April 2011, the coincident economic index increased 0.3 percent (about a 0.6 percent annual rate), a reversal from the decline of 0.7 percent (about a -1.4 percent annual rate) between April and October 2010. Meanwhile, real GDP increased at a 1.2 percent annual rate in the first quarter of 2011, following an increase of 0.9 percent annual rate in the final quarter of 2010.

The Spanish subsidiary of the German multinational Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) has been chosen by Telefónica as its technological partner to carry out the first NFC mobile phone project providing multiple applications inside a business complex. A group of users composed of Telefónica employees and clients of the participating banking entities will receive a Samsung mobile phone with NFC technology, allowing them to make payments in shops, restaurants, and cafés simply by bringing the handset close to the POS reader. Telefónica employees will be able to access the company buildings in Distrito C in Madrid by tapping their mobiles close to the access control reader. For this, G&D has developed a USIM card based on Java technology, capable of housing different applications and suitable for any NFC handset, incorporating VISA’s payment application and an SWP (Single Wire Protocol) interface which permits communication with the mobile device’s NFC chip and with the POS device.
Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, has selected Accenture’s Alnova Financial Solutions technology platform to help support the aggressive technology transformation of its U.S. banking franchise. The agreement with Accenture to deploy the new core banking solution will position BBVA’s U.S. banking subsidiary – BBVA Compass – allowing immediate posting of deposits and loan payments for increased efficiencies. The new core technology platform will also improve product time-to-market allowing the bank to quickly adapt to evolving customer preferences while at the same time proactively addressing changing regulations. The solution will deliver real-time bank processing capabilities and support increased transaction volumes for BBVA Compass while streamlining and enhancing the bank’s risk management functions.

The cards, which can hold up to EUR 3000 in value are available throughout Eroski’s 120 hypermarkets with plans to extend the gift card program to the company’s 1000 supermarkets in 2011. MoneyGram International has made available Movistar Remesas remittance through its 1,500 retail locations located throughout Spain. With this, it will provide a variety of communications services including phone and Internet access, Internet and phone cards and now money transfer services. Twenty-five shops have introduced MoneyGram services to-date and the company anticipates a gradual rollout of additional locations throughout the year. MoneyGram and Movistar officially launched their alliance, for which they will donate 10,000 euros each given to Proniño, the Telefónica Foundation-supported organization that works to eradicate child labor in Latin America, and to the Spanish Down Syndrome Organization.
