Visa Europe in conjunction with Oberthur Technologies has developed a new card feature for blind and partially sighted to identify their Visa debit, credit and prepaid cards more easily to improve ease of card use for the nearly 2 million blind or partially sighted in the UK. Card issuers will now have the opportunity to offer a Visa card with a tactile mark – a clear raised varnish key line around the Visa Brand Mark – that enables blind or partially sighted people to distinguish their debit or credit card more easily from other cards in their wallets and aid positioning in payment terminals. With this, card issuers will also be able to introduce other design related elements on the card surface, enhancing the users’ identification of individual cards.
June 2011 filings interrupted the downward trend in consumer bankruptcies, having jumped 4% from the May 2011 consumer bankruptcy total of 114,803 filings to 119,768, 5% greater than the year ago figure of 126,270 filings. Chapter 13 filings, meanwhile, also surged slightly 1% from the May figure to 28% in June. However, for the entire first half of the year, U.S. consumer bankruptcy filings painted a different picture, dropping 8% from the year ago figure to 709,303 since January 2011, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI), relying on data from the National Bankruptcy Research Center (NBKRC). The ABI is the largest multi-disciplinary, nonpartisan organization dedicated to research and education on matters related to insolvency.
UniCredit Slovakia implemented Gemalto digital security to provide “Optelio” contactless stickers for its first commercial mobile payment deployment. The first to market with a contactless debit payment service in Slovakia, the UniCredit Group footprint expands to 22 countries and an overall global network embracing approximately 50 markets through over 9,600 branches. The Optelio contactless sticker has achieved MasterCard certification, complements a full set of Gemalto services already available for mobile payment and is a microprocessor-based secure personal device that provides a compatibility solution to enable contactless functionality for handsets that don’t have contactless features built-in. Customers will be able to use the contactless feature on payments under EUR 20, while larger amount transactions will require a PIN code by attaching the sticker to their phone.

Consumer sentiment saw its largest one-month drop ever in June on the Discover U.S. Spending Monitor by 4.4 points to 85.1 from the May figure of 89.5. The daily poll of 8,200 consumers is reflective of the worst recorded since July 2009 and comes after few months of little change in consumer confidence. With this, over 60% of U.S. adults rated the economy as poor- up nearly 4 percentage points from May-while 56% say the economy is getting worse, a jump of nearly 5 percentage points from those who had that view in May and 51% say their personal finances are worsening, up from 48% the previous month. In June, nearly 59% of Americans who are at least 65 years old said the economy is getting worse, compared to just more than 47% of that group who felt that way the month earlier, while more than 56% of this age group say that their personal finances are worsening, up from just less than 52% the month before. The Monitor also reported an increase in the number of consumers who expect to have money left over after paying monthly bills at 47%, compared to 45.7% in May.
