Western Union Markets Prepaid Gold Card

Western Union launched its Gold Prepaid Card with VISA International and UnionBank of the Philippines. This will allow the cardholder to direct Western Union Money Transfer transactions directly onto the card by sending a text message, calling a customer-service hotline, visiting Western Union’s website or visiting a Western Union Agent location. The Western Union Gold Prepaid Card will introduce many Filipinos to the financial mainstream in a nation where, according to the World Bank, just 27 percent of adults over the age of 15 have bank accounts. In addition to remittances, cardholders can load their paychecks, government payments, their own cash and other earnings directly onto the card. It requires no minimum balance and includes a loyalty program.

Eurobank Deploys Mellon Technologies for Contactless Cards

Mellon Technologies IT integrator deployed its large-scale contactless EMV project in conjunction with Eurobank. The first contactless credit cards now available to bank customers, the EMV project allows cardholders to pay for goods of up to EUR25 with no need to enter a PIN or sign the payment slip. The biggest advantage of contactless payments is the transaction speed -by simply holding a contactless-enabled card over a reader, without entering a pin or signing a slip. While a typical card payment needs approximately 12 seconds to conclude, the contactless payment takes less than a second. Mellon Technologies cooperated with Gemalto , which Mellon represented for over 15 years.

UAE Exchange partners UNICEF For Underprivileged Children

UAE Exchange and UNICEF announced their renewed association for the cause of underprivileged children in 2012 to donate USD 100,000 to UNICEF for the cause. The contribution will be sourced from remittance transactions sent through UAE Exchange branches in UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, during the holy month of Ramadan, without levying any extra charge on the customers. UAE Exchange is a remittance and foreign exchange brand with operations across 30 countries, built over 30 years. The organization has been instrumental in aiding those affected in natural disasters and other social issues. U.S. Bank Offers Surcharge-Free Transactions at MoneyPass ATMs

Kroger prepaid debit cardholders can now enjoy surcharge-free transactions at all ATMs that offer the MoneyPass Network network of over 23,000 ATM locations. Surcharge-free MoneyPass ATM transactions are an extension of U.S. Bank’s extensive financial services relationship with The Kroger Co retailers. In 2010, U.S. Bank and Kroger formed a strategic alliance that offered Kroger customers and associates a suite of payment products and financial services, including reloadable prepaid debit products that offer rewards with every purchase and can be used to shop and pay bills online.

American Express Elect New Board Member

American Express Company announced that Daniel L. Vasella, M.D. has been elected to its Board of Directors. Having served as CEO and executive member of the Board of Directors for 14 years following the merger that created Novartis in 1996, Dr. Vasella was appointed Chairman of Novartis in April 1999. Before the Novartis merger, Dr. Vasella was CEO of Sandoz Pharma Ltd. and a member of the Sandoz Group Executive Committee. From 1988 to 1992, he was with Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corporation in the United States, prior to which he held a number of medical positions in Switzerland.

Bank of America Deploys EMV Chip Credit Cards

Bank of America is deploying its chip technology on many of its consumer credit cards to increase acceptance and security of the cards for international travelers. Also known as EMV (EuroPayMastercard Visa), the cards are embedded with a microprocessor chip that encrypts and stores the account information. The cards also include the traditional magnetic stripe, which is used by U.S. merchants. The bank will include the chip technology in all newly issued Merrill Lynch credit cards, U.S. Trust Accolades, BankAmericard Travel Rewards, BankAmericard Privileges, and Virgin Atlantic travel credit cards. Customers will be able to request the chip card options at the banking center or via phone beginning this week and online later this year.
