Bank of America is deploying its chip technology on many of its consumer credit cards to increase acceptance and security of the cards for international travelers. Also known as EMV (EuroPayMastercard Visa), the cards are embedded with a microprocessor chip that encrypts and stores the account information. The cards also include the traditional magnetic stripe, which is used by U.S. merchants. The bank will include the chip technology in all newly issued Merrill Lynch credit cards, U.S. Trust Accolades, BankAmericard Travel Rewards, BankAmericard Privileges, and Virgin Atlantic travel credit cards. Customers will be able to request the chip card options at the banking center or via phone beginning this week and online later this year.

Wells Fargo & Company expanded its “ExpressSend” remittance network through an agreement with Bancomer Transfer Services and will extend its consumer remittance payout network distribution to seven additional financial institutions. This will include partnerships with banks in the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru. Wells Fargo ExpressSend customers now have 35,800 remittance payout locations to send money to 15 countries in Latin America and Asia.
First Niagara Bank did it with a direct mail package that featured Free ATM access anywhere in the country. Along with this was a head-to-head competitive comparison and an easy-to-read design, resulting in a direct mail package that “hits a home run,” according to ABA Bank Marketing, which reviewed the package in November’s “The Letter Clinic” column. The mailing was developed by Catalyst, a direct and digital marketing agency.
More than half of consumers say they are committed to their bank and nearly two-thirds feel valued by them. Additionally, 57% attribute helpful staff and personal service to feeling valued and the majority of consumers cite positive customer service experiences as a principal reason for their commitment. Also, more than 40 percent of those polled say their bank demonstrates a commitment to them through no or low minimum balance requirements. These findings, according to TD Bank research, also show 48% say bank products and services are more valuable than telecommunications and less than 50% would actually take the step to close an account associated with the same fees. Other findings indicate bank show commitment with no monthly checking fees according to 65%; 65% say easy online banking; 64% say good customer service; 57% say no statement fees; and 53% say convenient bank locations.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that more than 9 million Americans fall victim to identity fraud each year, to which Cintas Corporation and the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) responded with its list of top 11 data protection tips to help consumers avoid identity theft in recognition to Data Privacy Day. The Companies’ top 11 tips to consumers for protecting personal information include shredding important documents; guarding their Social Security card; monitoring accounts online; keeping personal information private; imposing a “shred-all” policy at work; checking credit reports regularly; using unique passwords; practicing safe online habits, especially with social networking sites; protecting personal information while on vacation; explain cautions to children; and using a secure mailbox.
