HID Global secure identity solutions announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted several patents for the company’s innovation related to gesture-based methods of using three-dimensional (3-D) motion sequences to increase privacy, security and convenience when using RFID-based devices such as smart cards and NFC-enabled smartphones for a broad range of applications. These patent additions strengthen HID Global’s IP portfolio of over 1,000 pending and issued patents and protect the company’s intellectual capital. The invention opens up a new field of gesture-based authentication and is particularly pertinent when incorporated into an NFC-enabled mobile phone. These user-defined, gesture-based passwords can also work in a two-dimensional mode similar to a combination lock, or they can also include 3-D motions such as moving to the left, right, forward and backward.
Oberthur Technologies partnered HID Global, offering capability to support “Seos” digital keys on NFC-enabled smartphones. The partnership enables the Seos digital keys applet to be embedded in Oberthur Technologies NFC SIM cards, making it possible to use NFC smartphones for a wide range of applications that typically reside on smart cards. Oberthur Technologies´ dragonFly product family is a new generation of NFC SIM cards that combine speed and include best-in-class certifications (Common Criteria EAL4+, MasterCard, Visa, MIFARE DESFire™) and integrated anti-virus protection. The solution supports key applications driving NFC deployments such as transport, payment and access control. It also supports applications that facilitate a more convenient user experience, such as the use of a mobile phone for hotel check-in and hotel room access.

HID Global and Sony jointly developed contactless smart card reader platform that embeds secure access control capabilities and Near Field Communication (NFC) functionality into laptops and other mobile devices. The platform holds a secure element that stores cryptographic keys which secure the authenticity and integrity of user credentials. It supports widely used contactless technologies for applications ranging from physical access control and identity assurance at the desktop to transit-fare, point-of-sale collection and loyalty programs. The jointly developed NFC global reader platform is the result of a strategic partnership that Sony and HID Global announced last year.
ActivIdentity, a global leader in secure identity solutions which recently acquired by HID Global, is indicating high profile attacks have raised questions as to whether OTP tokens are fundamentally flawed. The variations in token algorithm differ in the way they display the ever changing number, subsequently influencing both the way we use them and their security. OTP algorithms normally are based on a static key (per device) and to make the numbers (OTPs) change use variable called ‘moving factors’, often time, event or both. Other OTP algorithms use both time and counter and hence really combine the best of properties of both time and counter based tokens, making them more difficult to phish and harder to predict.

HID Global has expanded its “multiCLASS” Magnetic Stripe line of readers available on the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) FIPS 201 Evaluation Program’s list of approved products to now include non-keypad readers. The listing enables U.S. Government organizations to purchase HID Global’s latest physical access reader products as they begin to implement migration programs from legacy magnetic stripe (magstripe) cards to contactless 13.56 MHz FIPS 201 credentials, for both single- and two-factor authentication scenarios. The “multiCLASS” line of multi-technology readers allows an agency’s access control system to function properly during the transition from current card technology to new FIPS 201 card requirements and contain features to simplify the conversion to the new standard because they are capable of simultaneously reading legacy cards and the new FIPS 201 cards. HID Global has also achieved UL294/cUL outdoor certification on all “multiCLASS” Magnetic Stripe readers.
HID Global secure identity has extended its “Identity on Demand” services to include a secure web portal that enables customers and channel partners to monitor and manage all aspects of card personalization projects. This spectrum includes from design and ordering through data transmission, high-quality multi-color printing, programming and on-time delivery anywhere in the world.
