Nearly 96% of the world’s population is mobile or about 7 billion. The awareness of the value of personal data is growing while solutions to manage usernames and passwords become more cumbersome and the use of biometric data to authenticate access will become more widely implemented.
The Republic of Kosovo has chosen Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) to manufacture and deliver its multifunctional, electronic, and entirely contactless smart ID cards. As prime contractor, the Munich-based technology company is assuming responsibility for all aspects of project management as well as for system development and manufacture of the cards. Sub-contractor for the Automated Fingerprint Inspection System (AFIS) and for the smartcard personalization machinery is Berlin-based Bundesdruckerei GmbH. G&D is also in charge of implementing and structuring all system components necessary to support every step in the ID documentation process, from applying for a card to delivering it. These new ID cards, which the Republic of Kosovo will begin issuing to its citizens by the end of this year, are among the most up-to-date smart ID cards in use anywhere in the world.
On Track Innovations announced that the Ministry of Public Security of Panama has awarded OTI with a contract for the supply, design, installation and integration of systems to monitor and improve immigration verification processes and overall immigration flow. OTI expects to recognize revenues of approximately $6.9 million, with the potential for additional revenue in future years from follow-on contracts. The contract provides for the supply of OTI’s end-to-end turnkey immigration solution, based on its proprietary state-of-the-art, field-proven eID Magna platform.
Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) selected Oberthur Technologies to deliver secure and anti-counterfeiting electronic driving licenses nationally. For this, Oberthur Technologies partnered TigerIT on this project to offer a biometric highly secure solution and will provide the smart cards while TigerIT will supply the enrolment solution, Oracle SOA based CMS, personalization system and the AFIS. Driving licence cards supplied by Oberthur Technologies to the BRTA will be produced with a long life plastic composite based on PETF material and will include a high resolution colour photo of the driver, fingerprints, signature, among other data. Additional features include rainbow printing, guilloches, micro-text, colour-shifting ink, and invisible UV fluorescent ink.

On Track Innovations contactless microprocessor-based smart card solutions for homeland security, payments, petroleum payments, eID Systems and other applications, has completed the upgrade of Zanzibar’s Permanent Voter Registry, including the distribution of biometric-based voter cards, for the country’s electoral commission. It concluded with the completion of general elections in Tanzania and Zanzibar, with OTI having supplied its end-to-end solution, based on its proprietary “Voter ID Registry Magna” platform. The system captured the identity of eligible citizens, posted voter lists and issued voter ID cards which were used in the recent election. Enrollment was conducted throughout the country, both in urban and rural areas, using OTI’s mobile enrollment systems. OTI also provided mobile enrollment stations and incorporated a biometric Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).
Contactless smart card provider On Track Innovations has
signed contracts for a national eID program worth $30 million. The contracts provide for the supply of OTI’s end-to-end turnkey solution, based on its proprietary state-of-the-art, field-proven eID Magna(TM) platform. OTI’s secured ID solution supports both online and offline communication, thereby allowing every citizen, living in cities and rural areas, to apply for an ID card regardless of the area’s communication infrastructure. This user-friendly solution is designed to provide maximum accuracy and security. The award of the project follows a successful completion by OTI of a pilot program and provides for the supply of new biometric-based electronic ID cards and other official documents (relating to birth, death, marriage, etc.), as well as the equipment required for the setup of the document issuing stations country-wide.

Teaming with a reputable system integrator that will be responsible for project management and local operation in the country, the partnership is to provide for an initial three-year period and minimum guaranteed amount of $17 million, starting in 2010. Supplying its end-to-end solution, based on its proprietary state-of-the-art ID Registry Magna platform, OTI’s system will be deployed nationwide to provide advanced software for ID management, supporting both online and offline communication for homeland security, payments, petroleum payments, eID Systems and other applications.
The “2009 AFI Global Policy Forum” in Nairobi attracted nearly 100 central bankers and other financial policymakers. The Thailand-based Alliance for Financial Inclusion, which is partly funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, endeavors to expand access to financial services to 2.5 billion unbanked consumers globally. AFI members, who represent more than 60 countries, have chosen to focus on six policy areas to increase financial inclusion for their respective countries: agent banking, diversification of financial products and providers, state bank reforms, financial identity, consumer protection and mobile phone banking. AFI is managed on behalf of its members by the German development organization Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Technische
Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) and supported with a $35 million grant from
the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Smart card provider On Track Innovations
has a signed a contract with the Registro Civil of the Government of Ecuador to launch a limited
scale pilot project for
the country’s National eID system, which will serve as the first stage
of the national eID system. The project includes issuance of new
biometric-based electronic ID cards and other public certificates
(birth, death, marriage, etc.) for the citizens of Ecuador.
OTI will supply its end-to-end turnkey solution, based on its
proprietary state-of-the-art, field-proven eID “Magna” platform. The
project includes supply of both stationary and mobile stations for data
enrollment, creating a central registry database and issuing
contactless, highly-secured smart ID cards. The solution also
incorporates a Biometric Automatic Fingerprint Identification System
(AFIS), which detects and prevents multiple registration attempts. The value of
this first stage project to OTI is estimated at $4 million, with
deliveries scheduled for the first half of 2009.
According to Reporterlinker forecasts, global biometric identification in
China is estimated to exceed USD 3 billion in 2007, reach USD 3.8 billion in 2008
and exceed USD 7.4 billion in 2012. It is estimated that global fingerprint
identification technology accounts for 58.9% of 2007 figures given that the
2006 biological identification market amounted to about RMB 860 million,
97% of which generated from biological identification products. The growth
in biological identification is projected to reach a growth margin of
60% for 2007 to RMB 960 million and it will reach RMB 4.651 billion in 2011.
San Francisco-based Pay By Touch has inked a major marketing deal with VeriFone, a development partnership with Cogent Systems, and a storewide expansion by Piggly Wiggly Carolina. Under the VeriFone agreement, both companies will work together to enhance the security, encryption and compatibility of each other’s solutions as well as offer an integrated solution. Under the Cogent Systems deal, the companies will focus on joint development to reduce the cost and simplicity of the installation of biometric payment solutions. Piggly Wiggly has decided, after a successful six-month pilot program, to deploy a storewide expansion of the Pay By Touch consumer biometric payment service in its grocery stores throughout South Carolina and Georgia. By the beginning of June, Piggly Wiggly shoppers across the two states will be able to pay for groceries with the touch of a finger.
