Virgin announced this morning it is installing smart card readers in all of its U.S. Megastore locations. The installation includes 320 countertop-sized @pos ‘iPOS TC’ payment devices combined with the @pos ‘M700’ smart card reader attachments. Virgin’s move to smart cards is the result of a new program launched by American Express for the ‘Blue’ card. Under the ‘Blue for Music’ program ‘Blue’ cardholders receive 30% off on featured artists’ CDs at Virgin Megastores nationwide. To activate the special offer, Blue cardholders will insert their card into the POS terminal’s smart card reader, which “reads” the information stored on the chip and verifies the cardholder’s name by displaying it on-screen, and then swipe their cards to complete payment for the transaction. The program will also include significant American Express presence at all U.S. Virgin Megastores, including Blue-branded aisle displays, listening stations and Blue-branded bin cards. The @pos ‘iPOS TC’ is equipped with an Intel ‘StrongARM’ processor and real-time operating system, for displaying messages on a full-color, quarter VGA screen. The device features dual channel connectivity for displaying Internet messages via a PCMCIA connection while capturing and transmitting secure transaction data. Standard RS-232, RS-485 or USB interfaces connect to the host POS system. (CF Library 5/9/01)
Next year, ‘Blue Cards’ will be energized with a system that enables American Express to offer customized, multiple functions using open technology standards on its smart cards. Utilizing the Proton ‘Prisma DP’ product, AmEx plans to integrate into its Java Card technology-based smart cards of two components: ‘CALC’ (Card Application & Life Cycle Manager) and ‘DFM’ (Data File Manager). ‘CALC’ creates a framework for card issuers to manage multiple applications on a single card, provides the ability to download smart card applications from multiple channels such as the Internet, and offers the ability for smart card users to access multiple applications through a single PIN. ‘DFM’ allows card issuers to customize files and directories to support applications defined by the issuers themselves or by third party application developers, and allows this to occur dynamically after issuance. More than six million AmEx smart ‘Blue Cards’ have been issued in the USA. American Express recently concluded a contest in search of smart card applications for ‘Blue’. (CF Library 4/26/01; 5/24/01)
American Express announced the winners in its contest that challenged Java developers from around the world to create innovative, new smart card applications for potential use on the credit card Blue from American Express. The ‘Code Blue’ contest was co-sponsored by Sun Microsystems and Oberthur Card Systems. Igor Fisher, of Tuebingen, Germany, will receive $50,000 as the first place winner of the ‘Code Blue’ contest, earning the honor with his “Pass Keeper” application. Pass Keeper would enhance a user’s smart card by storing a portable and securely locked list of Internet addresses (a/k/a bookmarks) together with a user’s PINs, passwords, or account numbers that might be required for entering those sites. Sirl Davis of the UK will receive $25,000 as the second place finisher. Mr. Davis’ application would use smart card technology for encrypting and gaining secure access to MP3 files and could be extended to other file formats, software, and video games. The third place winners created a Java Card technology application for couponing and electronic ticketing.
American Express announced a three-part program to enhance the music experience for ‘Blue’ customers while expanding the functionality of Blue’s smart chip at physical retail locations. The ‘Blue for Music’ program offers cardholders: 30% off on featured artists’ CDs at Virgin Megastores nationwide and at Virgin’s Web site; concert benefits at SFX Amphitheaters; and a special AmEx Web site where cardholders can enjoy music-related content including exclusive MP-3 downloads and artist features. New POS terminals that incorporate smart card readers will be installed in all U.S. Virgin Megastores and will be used to activate the special ‘Blue’ CD offers. SFX will operate the ‘Summer Concerts in Blue’ – Will Call window which will be equipped with an AmEx ‘Blue’ smart card reader, which verifies the cardholder’s order.
