The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) has released a new research paper, “U.S. Mobile Payments: Do They Disrupt Cash?” which examines the impact of mobile payments on the growth of cash. Despite all the attention it receives, mobile payments still account for only a very small fraction of retail in-store payments.
The ATM Industry Association has published a new study on recent global cash demand which shows that cash demand is increasing more than three times faster than worldwide economic growth rates. The study looked at year-on-year growth in currency in circulation in a range of 30 countries in advanced and developing economies over a 5 year period from 2009-2013.

ATM owners and operators have been urged to begin planning for U.S. EMV chip migration as soon as possible to protect themselves from potential fraud losses. The EMV Migration Forum is a cross-industry body focused on supporting the EMV implementation steps required for global and regional payment networks, issuers, processors, merchants, and consumers to help ensure a successful introduction of more secure EMV chip technology in the United States.
Atmia has published new international industry recommendations for maximizing the ATM user interface (UI) for about 2.4 million ATMs worldwide. Focused on recommendations regarding the accessibility, speed, operability, and security of ATMs, the manual shows how new interface technologies, such as tactile and multi-touch capabilities, biometrics and HTML 5, allow concepts usually applicable to mobile devices and tablets to be extended to ATM UIs. ATMIA has based the comprehensive set of new recommendations on inputs from deployers, software and hardware manufacturers, technical experts, processors, researchers and card issuers.
Botswana deploys high tech ATMs in a deal with Bytes Managed Solutions, Barclays and NCR. However, substantial adjustments had to be made to the ATMs for the Botswana market. Currency note templates had to be developed and then tested rigorously for correct note detection and rejection.
The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) announced the first ever ATM operator to be internationally certified after completing the industry’s new professional online operational training. Amy Coulson, Operations Manager with Pueblo Bank & Trust, has been awarded the industry endorsed International Certificate for ATM Operators to become the first certified ATM Operator since the training launched earlier this year. The courses offered are online, represent job-specific training for ATM operators and have been developed by ATMIA on an international level for all ATM operators/owners irrespective of which regional, national or global markets they operate ATMs in. Participation in the ATM Operator training is user-friendly, with all courses automatically tracked electronically via ATMIA’s website.
Barclays Bank of Botswana has partnered with Bytes Managed Solutions, the exclusive distributor of NCR technology solutions in southern Africa, for the installation of intelligent cash deposit ATMs. Last month, the bank launched a new generation of ATMs that provide customers with convenient ways of banking outside the banking halls. The ATMs are specifically designed for high transaction usage. They accept cash deposits with real time credit capability, recycle the deposited cash, dispense cash, do cheque deposits, and offer a broad range of other services, such as bill payment, funds transfer, mobile phone top-up and mini-statements.
The Electronic Funds Transfer Association in conjunction with the ATM Industry Association, has announced the release of a commissioned research report into the digital currency Bitcoin. The intensive report, written by Value Partners Management Consulting, authors of the industry’s bi-annual Global ATM Benchmarking studies, is called “Bitcoin: Virtual Currency with Real Opportunities”. ATMIA and EFTA are keen to develop industry positions on the current and future significance of Bitcoin. It presents a history and comprehensive international analysis of Bitcoin. Bitcoin digital currency allows people to send and receive payments within an entirely decentralized peer-to-peer network.

The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) announced the creation of a new U.S. Underbanked Forum, to help foster development and deployment of ATM solutions addressing the needs of the unbanked and underbanked. Although explosive growth in the use of mobile devices for payments and banking services has dramatically improved consumer accessibility, there is still a need for more options that are not tied to traditional bank accounts.
