American Express reported fourth-quarter consolidated total revenues net of interest expense rose to $9.1 billion from $8.5 billion a year ago, up 7% (9% when adjusted for foreign currency translations). The revenue increase primarily reflected the previously reported gain of $719 million ($453 million after-tax) on the sale of the company’s investment in Concur Technologies. The increase also reflected a rise in cardholder spending and higher net interest income.

The Board of Directors of First Data Corporation announced that Frank Bisignano has been named chief executive officer (CEO) and the board of directors. Previously, Bisignano most recently served as Co-Chief Operating Officer of JP Morgan Chase &Co. (“JPMorgan Chase”), one of the largest providers of banking, lending, treasury, wealth management and investment services that serves 50 million customers, including consumers, small businesses, mid-size companies, corporations, financial institutions, nonprofits and governments. Bisignano also was the chief executive officer for Citigroup’s Global Transactions Services business and a member of Citigroup’s Management Committee and was the Chief Administrative Officer for Citigroup’s Corporate and Investment Bank, a senior executive vice president and Citigroup’s firm-wide deputy head of technology and operations.

VeriFone Systems has been awarded an $8.5 million contract by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York to install and service its open-architecture vehicle tracking TransitPAY system on more than 1,000 buses serving the Bronx. This follows a similar contract in 2011 for the Staten Island fleet component of the MTA Bus Time system. MTA Bus Time uses VeriFone on-board systems to generate location data that is communicated wirelessly to the Bus Time server that passengers can access for real-time information. Passengers can use computers, cell phones, smartphones or other devices from home, the office, while out shopping or dining, to get information about when the next bus will arrive at a stop. This offers a rugged, reliable and secure solution that can transform the passenger experience and can integrate NFC smartphone-based payments and contactless smart cards.

Chase and LivingSocial announced the 12 small businesses that will receive grants of $250,000 each through “Mission: Small Business” grant program. To increase awareness of the important role small businesses play in local communities, “Mission: Small Business” is supported by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Moreover, nearly 70,000 small businesses registered and 3.1 million while consumers showed voted for their favorite small businesses. American Express announced film director Edward Burns will direct a short film concept that was selected as the winner of the 2011 My Movie Pitch contest, that will debut at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival. He will work to script, cast, direct and produce the film, a romantic comedy idea submitted by Susan Brennan of Brooklyn, New York. Burns’ selection of Brennan’s idea marks the capstone of the second year of My Movie Pitch, a competition that seeks to bring one inspirational storyteller’s unique movie idea to life as an independent short film. New this year, Burns, in partnership with American Express, will bring film lovers inside the indie filmmaking process, providing fans with a rare opportunity to collaborate on the creative process and impact creative decisions on the project.
