VISA Gets Reel

As part of the agreement, Reel.com will deliver a variety of exclusive promotions to the 600 million Visa worldwide cardholders through Visa’s 21,000-member financial institutions. In exchange, Visa will receive preferred status and prominent branding throughout the Reel.com site and will be the default payment card on the site’s checkout page.

Bank One Breaks $70 Billion

Bank One announced this morning that managed card loans ended 1998 at $70,027,000,000. Average managed credit card loans were 15% higher in the 1998 fourth quarter than one year earlier and included the positive impact of the acquired Chevy Chase portfolio. On an end-of-period basis, balances in the VISA/MasterCard portion of the credit card portfolio, which represents 99% of credit card loans, were up 21%. Bank One’s First USA also added a record 2.9 million new accounts in the 1998 fourth quarter.  Cardholders at year-end totaled 56.6 million, down from 57.2 million at the end of the third quarter, the net change related to a joint venture established for the private label business.Net chargeoffs at year-end for managed card loans stood at 4.79% compared to 5.91% one year ago. VISA and the Pro Football Hall of Fame will honor the 31 “Greatest NFL Fans” in new VISA ‘Hall of Fans Exhibit’ next week. On Jan. 19, the 31 die-hard fans will be honored in Canton, OH, for the first time in NFL history. On hand for the ceremony will be NFL legend, Hall of Famer and VISA ‘Hall of Fans’ spokesperson Art Donovan. VISA and the Pro Football Hall of Fame conducted a nationwide search for the most dedicated fans. Selected by a panel of judges from the Hall of Fame, NFL and Visa, these ultimate fans are among the most loyal, knowledgeable and enthusiastic in pro football.

SmartWorld

CyberMark unveiled its ‘SmartWorld Partnership Program’ in an effort to expand the company’s linkage of industry leaders in the development, delivery and support of smart card solutions for corporate and college campuses. Microsoft, Gemplus, First USA, and PTI/ICL have joined the program. The ‘SmartWorld Partnership’ combines the offerings of key smart card applications and service providers with the sales and support of CyberMark’s ‘SmartWorld’ smart card platform.  SmartWorld is CyberMark’s multi-application smart card platform that operates at more than fifteen communities across North America.  More than 400,000 cardholders can use their CyberMark smart card for cashless purchases anywhere they see the ‘SmartWorld’ logo. First USA said it joined the partnership following a successful rollout of this blended technology with CyberMark at Florida State University.

Shell Card Sale

Associates First Capital reached an agreement last night to acquire and manage the Shell proprietary credit card program. The Shell portfolio consists of approximately $272 million in receivables and about 2.3 million active cardholder accounts. Terms of the deal were not revealed. The Associates, will become the issuer, processor and servicer for the both the Shell and Texaco private label card programs, including commercial cardholder accounts. The Associates previously acquired the Texaco portfolio.The company ranks first in the gasoline proprietary credit card market with approximately 7 million active accounts.

Triple Trip Miles

Travelers earn triple the miles for every dollar spent during the introduction of the ‘TripMiles Reward Program’. The new program allows travelers to earn miles each time they purchase airfare on TheTrip.com using their VISA card. The triple miles promotion will run through Jan. 31. Later this month, travelers can begin tracking their account balance online and converting this award into frequent flyer miles with participating major airlines. TheTrip.com is based in Denver.

GlobeSet * Oki

GlobeSet announced Monday it will provide server-based ‘SET’ and e-debit payment solutions to strategic partner, Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd., for an electronic commerce shop-and-buy pilot in Japan to be piloted this month. The goal of the pilot will be to evaluate security and convenience of a server-based payment solution processing ‘SET’ and e-debit payments, and test interoperability between the server-based payment solution and conventional SET payment systems. The pilot will be conducted in conjunction with the Japan Information Processing Development Center.

Intercept Endorsement

The InterCept Group announced that the Georgia Bankers Association has entered into a joint marketing agreement with InterCept Switch, known as “The Surcharge Free Network.” The agreement becomes an endorsement of InterCept Switch for the GBA’s 382 members. The InterCept Switch was introduced in mid 1997.

Breaking Into U.K.

Euronet Services Inc. announced Friday it will install ATMs in off-bank locations throughout the United Kingdom following the signing of an agreement with the British bank Woolwich plc. Under the terms of the deal, the ATMs will be installed by Euronet in selected locations with Woolwich plc. Cardholders will be charged a convenience fee of 1 British pound sterling for each cash withdrawal.  Euronet also signed a real-estate agreement with Spar supermarkets to place ATMs in certain Spar locations. There are 70 million ATM cards in U.K.. Euronet also reported Friday that transactions over its network grew 19% in December to nearly two million. As of Dec. 31, Euronet was operating 528 ATMs in Hungary, 425 in Poland, 197 in Germany, 68 in Croatia, 50 in the Czech Republic, two in France and one in the U.K.

TSYS 4Q

Total System Services reported yesterday that net income for 1998 increased 15.5% to $54.8 million on 1998 revenues of $396.2 million. TSYS says for the first time in the history of its Year 2000-compliant cardholder system, TSYS is processing a majority of its accounts on ‘TS2′. At the end of the fourth quarter of 1998, TSYS was processing approximately 62 million of its 117 million accounts on file on TS2.  The conversion of the Universal Card Services’ accounts to ‘TS2′ was completed in the fourth quarter of 1998. Also during the fourth quarter TSYS acquired the Partnership Card Services unit from Columbus Bank & Trust and as of Jan.1., the new unit became part of TSYS’ wholly owned subsidiary, TSYS Total Solutions, Inc. TSYS projected yesterday that by the end of 1999, the company will increase its accounts on file to approximately 190 million with the conversions of the card portfolios of Sears, Canadian Tire and Royal Bank of Canada.

Super Bowl Spots

VISA and BBDO New York are currently developing two new 30-second TV spots to premiere during Super Bowl XXXIII on Jan. 31.  VISA said Thursday this marks only the second time it will break two new spots since the company began advertising during the Super Bowl in 1994. The two new VISA spots are scheduled to air during the first half of the game. VISA’s 1998-99 NFL integrated marketing program includes title sponsorship of the FOX Halftime Report, NFL-themed advertising, member-supported national consumer promotions, retail tie-ins, league support, charitable contributions and a new fan exhibit at the Pro Football Hall of Fame entitled “Visa Hall of Fans.”
