Gemalto USA EMV

Gemalto has acquired Rhode Island-based Shoreline and Atlanta, GA-based Source One Direct, two payment card personalization bureaus in the USA. Gemalto notes that the USA market is moving towards an October, 2015 liability shift which mandates EMV chip technology to replace the older magnetic stripe cards. Last year alone there were over 1.6 billion EMV (chip & PIN) cards in use across the globe and many issuers in the USA are now accelerating their own migration in light of the recent security breaches, e.g. Target, that have occurred with major retailers.

Off-Premise ATMs Ideally Suited for Wi-Fi Access

While the U.K. historically is a “follower” rather than an “innovator” in the financial services industry, it has pioneered ATM optical recognition technology and is now leading the way by turning ATMs in Wi-Fi hotspots. This week, Cashbox and British Telecommunications inked a five-year deal to add wireless Internet services to more than 2,500 off-premise ATM locations across the U.K. Customers from iPass, Boingo and other BT “Openzone” roaming partners will also be able to use the service. The new “Openzone” hotspots will expand the BT network in the U.K. for BT’s 4.8 million broadband customers. BT customers can also connect at over 190,000 residential and commercial hotspots in the U.K. and Ireland including BAA airports, BA lounges, Caffe Nero, Hilton, Thistle and Ramada Jarvis hotels and, shortly from Starbucks coffee stores. According to CardFlash International, Cashbox deploys Tidel ATMs and had 2,838 installed machines at the end of 2008.

OPENZONE

Cashbox is enabling all of its ATM sites as Wi-Fi hotspots, allowing
users to surf, work, game or make VoIP calls with any wireless-enabled
device using BT “Openzone”. Having inked a five-year contract with BT,
Cashbox is offering the wireless broadband service initially through
2,500 machines in Tiger Tiger sites in London, Manchester, Glasgow,
Cardiff, Digress, The Wall, Agenda, Abacus, Livery and Alibi bar
restaurants in the City of London. The 4.8 million BT broadband
customers with inclusive Wi-Fi minutes, O2 iPhone, iPass, Boingo and
other BT Openzone users now have access to 3,000 BT Openzone hotspots
included in their contracts. BT communications solutions and services
operate in 170 countries through its “Global Services”, “Openreach”, “BT
Retail” and “BT Wholesale” solutions.

Simply Brilliant Rewards Card is Unveiled

NV-based Legacy Card Company has signed a deal with Commerce Bank to be the credit card issuer for the “Simply Brilliant Rewards Credit Card.” The new card provides Missouri residents a financial vehicle program that assists parents in saving for their children’s future educational opportunities. The “Simply Brilliant Rewards Credit Card” provides a tax-free educational savings fund that benefits with daily card usage from Legacy’s network of distinguished Missouri businesses and nationally recognized merchants who contribute up to 10% of the purchase to the designated child’s 529 educational account of the cardholder. Additionally, Commerce Bank will contribute 1% of the net purchase sale into the Cardmember’s tax-free 529 education account. As part of the agreement, Legacy Card Company will utilize Denver-based Rainbow Rewards USA to track all “Simply Brilliant Rewards.”

BMIBABY MASTERCARD

The U.K.’s second largest discount airline has launched a co-branded credit card with Citi Cards. The new “bmibaby MasterCard” offers a free return flight on the first purchase. Cardholders earn an additional return flight if they spend GBP 5,000 or more within 12 months from obtaining the card. The same offer is then available to cardholders for every subsequent twelve-month period. The card also offers a 15.9% APR on purchases and 0% for the first six months on all balance transfers. bmibaby was established in January 2002 and operates about 4,000 flights a month throughout Europe.

Cardiff Acquires a College Tuition Card

California-based Cardiff International has closed a deal to acquire Colorado-based Legacy Card Co., the developer of the “Commitment 529 Tuition MasterCard,” in an all stock deal. The Commitment 529 Tuition Card is a tax-free educational savings reward credit card that concentrates consumer loyalty and buying on national retailers in the Legacy merchant coalition. Merchants will contribute from 1% to 10% on card spend to the cardholder’s child’s “529” tax-free educational fund account. The retailer contribution will be supplemented by a 0.5% to 1.0% contribution from the card issuer.

VISA to Partner with Rugby World Cup

VISA International is the Official Worldwide Partner and official payment
service for Rugby World Cup 2007 for the fourth time. The tournament,
staged every four years, is the biggest rugby event in the world. VISA is
granted the worldwide rights to use the RWC 2007 marks and designations in
promotional tie-ins with participating merchants, in advertising and
point-of-sale materials, on packaging and on premium items or materials.
It also allows VISA to offer event access and exclusive hospitality to its
members, merchants and cardholders.

Rank Group Signs a Global Cash Access Deal

The Rank Group has signed a multi-year agreement to use the products and services of Global Cash Access. Thirty-six Rank Group properties, including all Grosvenor and Hard Rock casinos, are under contract and will utilize GCA’s “QuikCash” cash advance kiosks. GCA’s customer base in the United Kingdom now includes 130 casinos.

Las Vegas-based Global Cash Access, Inc. is a provider of cash access products and related services to approximately 960 gaming properties and other clients in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and the Caribbean.

A new survey has found that single British women spend approximately a third of their income on socializing in the country’s wine bars. The research, commissioned by Egg, also found that 30-plus single females have, on average, GBP 4,567 in credit card debt and GBP 0 in savings. The poll, released as the new Bridget Jones movie is released, found that more than three quarters of those quizzed drink Bridget’s favorite tipple, white wine. However chardonnay, drunk by the bucket load by the fictitious heroine, is drunk by less than half of our real life Miss Jones’s. Furthermore just under a third admit to smoking and this applies equally across the six cities surveyed. The average income of the Bridgets was GBP 25,000 per annum across the cities, with Londoners having a higher mean salary of GBP 29,000 compared to the others. On average less than half surveyed have a regular saving plan and whilst a large proportion is spending money on going out without considering it to be a problem, 1 in 10 admit they are in financial strife.
