MasterCard has launched Safety Net in Europe to reduce the impact of cyberhacking of banks and processors. It is designed to use the power of MasterCard’s global network, to identify unusual behavior and potential attacks – often, even before the bank or processor is even aware.
NCR Corporation has begun upgrading ATMs at People’s United Bank with the new consumer card security technology, in conjunction with Vantiv and Pendum, and the first EMV ATM in the US is officially in service. The first upgraded ATMs are the People’s United Bank ATMs located at their 250 Park Avenue, New York, branch. The upgrade includes an upgrade to the card reader hardware inside the machines as well as a software upgrade. Since 2011, NCR has been shipping all SelfServ™ ATMs with smart card readers as standard. Globally, 36 percent of cards and 65 percent of terminals in deployment run using the EMV standard. Vantiv became the first U.S. acquirer to complete MasterCard’s testing requirements to process EMV transactions for MasterCard, Maestro and Cirrus brands at both ATM and at the point-of-sale locations.
Telefónica and MasterCardMFS (Mobile Financial Service), a joint venture between Telefónica and MasterCard Worldwide, is launching Zuum mobile payment service. Allowing customers access to a pre-paid account on their phone that will allow them to transfer money, buy credits for pre-paid mobile phones, and pay bills, customers can also choose to receive a pre-paid card from MasterCard which is connected to the same pre-paid account. Customers can use the card to make purchases in more than 1.8 million affiliated establishments and withdraw money in Cirrus ATMs. Zuum uses USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) technology to enable users to access their accounts from their Vivo mobile phone, using any device. It’s as simple as sending a text message, but without the cost. There’s no maintenance fee for the account or the card.
Euronet 360 Finance Ltd., a subsidiary of Euronet Worldwide, launched of end-to-end prepaid card issuing, processing and BIN sponsorship solutions in Europe. Euronet 360 Finance Ltd., under the supervision of the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), is now providing electronic money and payment services through card issuing, BIN sponsorship and payment card acquiring. By passporting the e-money license across the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) territory (except Monaco), Euronet 360 Finance Ltd. is able to issue cards and process transactions across the entire European Economic Area (EEA). Euronet’s complete prepaid card solution provides non-FCA licensed organizations with the ability to quickly, easily and cost effectively enter the prepaid card arena. Euronet’s prepaid card solution include the support of physical and virtual cards, for one-time, gift card or reloadable use with contactless functionality through MasterCard Paypass.
Vantiv payment processing for merchants and financial institutions of all sizes, announced that it was the first U.S. acquirer to complete MasterCard’s testing requirements to process EMV transactions for MasterCard, Maestro and Cirrus brands at both ATM and at the point-of-sale locations. Vantiv’s integrated processing platform continues to enable the Company to quickly integrate new technologies such as EMV. The first ATM installed in Myanmar became the first to accept an international payments MasterCard. This after the September announcement MasterCard Worldwide is to be the first international payments network to issue a license to a Myanmar bank, paving the way for branded cards to be issued and accepted in the country for the first time. Tourists and business travelers with an international MasterCard, Maestro or Cirrus-branded card will now be able to withdraw money, and in the local currency. CB Bank has the largest ATM network in the country.
MasterCard Worldwide issued a license to a Myanmar bank, paving the way for branded cards to be issued and accepted in the country for the first time, following a historic agreement signed this month. The license agreement with Myanmar’s Co-Operative Bank Limited will see the issuing of MasterCard branded cards and the acceptance of MasterCard/ Maestro/ Cirrus cards by ATMs within the country. The agreement also enables merchants in Myanmar to accept MasterCard payment cards, giving them access to commerce and the ability to participate in the open, global payments system that MasterCard enables. Merchants will also benefit from being part of a network of thousands of issuing and acquiring financial institutions and their suppliers and partners.

Dave Keenan has joined Fiserv financial services technology solutions as its GM, ACCEL/Exchange payments network. Bringing with him more than 25 years of payments experience to Fiserv, he served as vice president of Sales and Marketing at BankServ, a provider of specialized payment solutions for financial institutions and corporations using SWIFT, Fedwire, P2P, mobile and remote deposit capture technologies. He also served as managing director of Loyalty Marketing at United Airlines, where he was responsible for its loyalty program and corporate marketing partnerships. Keenan also served as senior vice president at MasterCard International, where he held a variety of leadership positions including head of global operations for the Cirrus network. He began his career as a systems programmer with Fifth Third Bank’s Midwest Payment Systems (MPS) subsidiary, writing machine language code that connected some of the first ATM/point of sale networks.
