Through its “Our World, Our Family” initiative, Western Union announced a multi-faceted package of support to respond to the current humanitarian crisis in East Africa. Consumers and global non-profit organizations, Western Union and the Western Union Foundation will contribute up to US$750,000 to several groups working to ease the suffering in affected countries across East Africa. Global experts have referred to the crisis in East Africa as the most serious food insecurity situation in the world while several countries in the region have been devastated by cyclical drought, leaving millions of East Africans in the grip of starvation and forcing the displacement of hundreds of thousands who can no longer survive in their home communities.

US Bank, Monitise Americas and Fis partnered to offer “ReliaCard” a new mobile app for U.S. Bank ReliaCard Visa cardholders in 16 states. The “ReliaCard” is a prepaid, reloadable card for those who receive recurring cash disbursements from a government agency, giving cardholders in various government programs convenient, free access to their accounts anywhere and anytime using their mobile phone. The new app allows ReliaCard cardholders to check their balance, pay bills, receive account alerts and view mini-statements on-the-go with ReliaCard mobile banking and can be downloaded by cardholders at reliacard.com. Cardholders can use the ReliaCard everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted worldwide, as well as most ATMs.
Western Union, along with Food Lion and Rite Aid, donated $300,000 to benefit the American Red Cross. In conjunction, Western Union set up its “Quick Collect” contribution account in the U.S., benefiting the American Red Cross, allowing onsumers in the U.S. to contribute to relief efforts through the American Red Cross by making a no-fee “Quick Collect” money transfer transaction directed to the account of up to $5,000 over the next 30 calendar days. The Western Union Foundation is also encouraging employee donations through the Western Union “Employee Gift Matching Program,” through which it will match registered employee donations to the American Red Cross on a one-for-one basis.
