eBay reported that PayPal posted $582 million in first quarter revenue, an increase of 32% year-over-year. Net total payment volume for the quarter was $14.4 billion, an increase of 34% over 1Q/07. At the end of the quarter PayPal had 60.2 million active accounts, a 17% increase from one-year ago. During the first quarter, PayPal handled 211.0 million payments, a 3% increase over the prior quarter, and up 23% from 1Q/07. PayPal’s 1Q/08 transaction revenue rate increased to 3.88% from 3.84% in the prior quarter. The processing expense rate for the first quarter was flat at 1.18% from the prior quarter, but up from 1.15% in the year ago quarter. PayPal’s transaction loss rate came in at 24 basis points, down 6 basis points from one-year ago. During the first quarter PayPal signed Merchant Service account deals with JetBlue Airlines, Ferrari Store (Italy), CompUSA and Office Depot (U.K.), among others; completed the acquisition of Fraud Sciences to accelerate the development of its fraud detection tools; and expanded its seller protection plan for eBay Power Sellers. Chase reports it has now issued more than six million of its credit cards with “blink” in nine states. The latest markets for the Chase contactless credit cards are the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex area and the greater Orlando area. Chase is issuing about 800,000 new credit cards with “blink” to Texas cardholders, with an initial base of approximately 500 merchant locations in 32 Texas counties. Chase is also unveiling its new blink-enabled “Texas Rangers Ultimate Fan Rewards MasterCard.” Meanwhile, Chase is delivering approximately 500,000 cards with “blink” to Central Florida customers, with an initial base of over 320 locations in nine counties. Launched in May, Chase credit cards with “blink” have now been issued in Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.
Los Angeles-based Next Estate Communications has inked a licensing deal with NASCAR to introduce the “NASCAR Prepaid VISA.” It is the first sports-affinity debit card. With the purchase of the card, fans will also receive a premium NASCAR-licensed gift and enjoy a free trial membership in the “Official NASCAR Members Club,” which launches in February. The card is expected to roll-out in the first quarter of 2006. The cards will be issued by Columbus Bank and Trust Company. Next Estate distributes its prepaid products in 50,000 retail locations nationwide.
