A recent survey by eBay’s shopping.com has found that 33% of online merchants plan to offer free shipping this holiday season, but 69% indicated they are offering some type of holiday shopping incentives, whether it’s discounted merchandise, free gift cards, in-store pickup or other offers. Meanwhile, some e-retailers are reporting that traffic is running three times higher than traffic on “Cyber Monday” last year. Shopping.com also found that 86% of shoppers want free shipping incentives this holiday and more than half believe all merchants should offer this as a standard policy year-round. Holiday discounts are next on shoppers’ wish lists after free shipping, with 71% of respondents hoping to clamor for deals this season. A survey by NRF’s shop.org determined that 72 million consumers will shop online this holiday season with men more likely to shop from work than women (57.3% vs. 51.7%) and young adults 18-24 years old are more likely to shop there than any other age group (72.9%). Nearly 29% of retailers offered one-day sales and about 25% offered free shipping on all purchases for “Cyber Monday.” Shop.org also found that more than 72% of online retailers are planning a special promotion for Cyber Monday, up from 43% just two years ago.
Nearly one-third of thirty major retail sites experienced significant slow-downs on Friday that impacted the product search and check-out processes that will likely affect online sales. Also, popular items such as the “Nintendo Wii” and “Zune” mp3 players sold out quickly on “Black Friday.” Keynote reports that its monitoring of retail site performance showed a definite slow-down in site performance over the course of “Black Friday.” The worst performing sites on “Black Friday” were showing up to a 400% slow down and well-known brands such as Buy.com and Lowes experienced significant slow downs. However, Keynote noted that none of the leading sites it monitors appeared to go completely dark on Friday, whereas several leading sites experienced periods with complete outages last holiday season. Meanwhile, eBay companies, including Shopping.com and PayPal, reported that Shopping.com traffic to merchants in the “Gifts/Flowers” and “Clothing/Accessories” categories throughout the “Thanksgiving” holiday grew by 57% and 52% respectively year-over-year. Overall, Shopping.com’s traffic to merchants increased 61% over last year’s “Black Friday,” November 24, 2006. eBay noted that, based on the previous five years of PayPal’s online shopping research, data show that Mondays are the busiest day of the week for online shopping and the second Monday in December is solidifying its place as the actual busiest online shopping day of the season. In 2006, online shopping activity on PayPal was 96% higher on the second Monday in December than on “Thanksgiving Day.”

Diebold has released research on the next-generation retail banking customer. The “Identifying the Next-Generation Retail Banking Customer” report reveals that ATM usage continues to find strong support across generations. The study shows that aside from withdrawing cash, all generations unilaterally rate viewing account balances, making deposits and transferring funds between accounts as their three most-preferred ATM services. Meanwhile, all segments tend to prefer ATM deposits versus making one via online from home. The majority of members from all generations surveyed also support the potential to use the ATM to scan checks directly over making traditional, envelope-based deposits. “Gen Y” members are oriented more to parallel information processing and multi-tasking than their older counterparts. Also, customization functions, such as check and cash deposit automation, one-to-one marketing ability and capability to communicate new, retail banking services in real time, further enhance an ATM’s appeal to young bank users.
