NY-based VAI has entered into an agreement with VeriFone Holdings, to integrate VeriFone’s “MX870” payment platform and RiTA Server payment transaction middleware into its “S2K Enterprise” for Retail Point-of-Sale software. VeriFone’s RiTA Server is a highly scalable transaction middleware that supports high-volume, multi-threaded transaction processing. Eliminating the need for a gateway solution, the RiTA Server can accept all major credit cards, support a range of processors and connection methods and process credit, debit, purchasing card, gift/loyalty and check transactions. This partnership is part of a larger strategic effort by VAI to increase the firm’s global reach to customers in the retail market. VAI is an IBM Premier Business Partner and software developer.
PA-based convenience store chain Sheetz has teamed with Chase to launch an enhanced “Sheetz MasterCard with blink.” The enhancement is a more robust “Sheetz Rewards” program. Under the new program cardholders receive a 10% rebate on all Sheetz purchases and a 2% rebate for all other purchases for the first 90 days the account is open. Thereafter, a 3% rebate on all Sheetz purchases; 2% on groceries, travel and dining purchases; and 1% on all other eligible purchases. The rebates can be redeemed for $25 gift cards from various retailers. In May 2005, the “Sheetz MasterCard” became the first co-branded credit card to feature “blink,” Chase’s contactless payment option. VeriFone Transportation Systems has become the first to be approved for the full-scale roll-out in New York City taxis. The Taxi & Limousine Commission has mandated that beginning October 1st all medallion yellow taxicabs are to install an interactive electronic passenger map and information screen, and credit/debit card acceptance. Systems implemented by VTS are the first to obtain a formal “Notice to Proceed” from the TLC, authorizing installation and use in any of the 13,000 licensed cabs in the city. The VeriFone-based solution utilizes wireless technology to provide integrated payment in the passenger cab, including a card swipe and contactless payment for credit and debit payment of fares, in an ATM style interface. Riders have the option to select a preset tip from a list of choices, or input their own amount. A 10.4-inch touch-screen monitor provides news and content for passengers through an exclusive partnership with WABC-TV New York. Content selections include news and weather from WABC; sports from ESPN; and information on restaurants, night life, hotels and attractions from Zagat Survey. Near-term enhancements will include traffic, movie previews and local event information at the touch of a button.
Hypercom Corporation is expanding its “Optimum” line of 32-bit multi-application electronic payment terminals in the third quarter with a new global countertop platform. The new PCI PED-approved “Optimum T4200” family will be available in three EMV and three non-EMV models, including a dial only model, Ethernet/SSL with dial backup and wireless GSM/GPRS connectivity also with dial backup. The new products can be used in either merchant-facing or hand-over payment environments. The six “Optimum T4200” models share the same compact form factor including a 19-key keypad layout. All six models in the new series incorporate a 160 x 80 pixel monochrome display, come standard with 24MB of memory that is four to eight times larger than similar products, and can process debit, credit, smart card and value-added transactions such as gift/loyalty and dynamic currency conversion.
NY-based Covera Card Solutions, a provider of ATM, debit and credit card processing services, announced it will now be offering compliance support to all client credit unions for their ATM, credit and debit programs at no additional cost. Covera decided to introduce the free value-added service after they began receiving a myriad of compliance calls. Many of the calls were received whenever new federal or state changes were made to existing card regulations. Denver-based IP Commerce is offering payment services powered by PayPal to help small businesses streamline their accounting processes and better manage cash flows. These PayPal services include an email invoicing solution in “PASS Commerce Center” and a “Sales Ticker,” as part of the “PASS Gadget” which can be placed in the “Windows Vista” sidebar. The new services for SMBs are now available in the “PASS Commerce Center.” The solutions leverage IP Commerce’s “IP Payments Framework,” a single platform that provides the framework to enable disparate applications and services to communicate. PayPal’s technology allows small businesses to create and send their customers payment-enabled invoices over email using the “PASS Email Invoicing” service. The invoices include an encrypted payment button that is embedded into the invoice, allowing small businesses to accept payment through their PayPal accounts. The “Sales Ticker” allows PayPal small business users to add an active desktop icon that receives and alerts them to incoming PayPal payments in real-time, without the need to login to their PayPal accounts.
Chicago-based QuikOrder has been awarded a patent for a rapid entry system for the placement of product and service orders via the Internet. “FAVORDER” is a one-click solution for ordering products and services at websites and via cellphones and PDAs. Initial ordering information including payment by credit card, PayPal or other payment mechanism, delivery or pickup information and product data is encapsulated in a coded URL. An icon representing the order can be inserted on the desktop, as a favorite browser setting or on the quick launch bar. After that, one click submits any repeat order. While optional settings can be specified to prompt for passwords or additional confirmation steps based on input from the firm providing the product or service, the system is designed to reduce the customer action to one single click. QuikOrder Inc. is an online ordering company serving the $30 billion pizza industry.
This summer teens will have the opportunity to design their own general purpose prepaid card. The “PAYjr VISA Buxx Card” will enable teenagers to upload, enlarge, rotate, move and flip their chosen photos inside the card template without any special software downloads. In addition, PAYjr is developing license relationships with various musical artists, major league teams and popular teen brands to provide teens with a wide variety of card designs to choose from. To help promote the program, PAYjr will be running a card design competition, allowing teens to place an interactive mini version of the design on their blogs and MySpace pages. The “PAYjr VISA Buxx Card” is issued by South Dakota-based BankFirst and is marketed by Dallas-based PAYjr. The design feature is powered by U.K.-based Serverside Group.
Affiliated Computer Services(ACS) has signed a 6.3 million euro contract
district councils of Nancy, France to provide the ACS “ATLAS” contactless
ticketing system. “ATLAS” combines magnetic and contactless ticketing
equipment. The equipment is compatible with both the new ticketing
traditional magnetic tickets of which over 800 are to be installed on
and approximately 300 on buses in the area. ACS will also provide dashboard-
devices called the “ACS Proxibus CPE 020” compact console, a ticketing
console and an operation-aid system with an integrated Global

CA-based prepaid card specialist, Blackhawk Network, has hired Mari Ellis, former chief operations officer for the prepaid services group at First Data, as SVP Ellis joins Blackhawk Network with over thirty years of experience leading financial services companies. Prior to joining First Data, Ellis was a pioneer of stored value products and technology with American Express, a leading global payments, network and travel company. Blackhawk Network, a subsidiary of Safeway Inc., is a prepaid and payments network, a market leader in card-based financial solutions and the largest provider of third-party prepaid cards.
Visa Europe and Mastercard “Paypass” are leading a roll-out of contactless
credit and debit cards for financial institutions. For the 1st phase, these
institutions include Bank of Scotland, Barclaycard, Citi, Euroconex
Technologies Ltd, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds TSB, and The Royal Bank of
Scotland Group. APACS estimates suggest that over 5 million contactless
cards will be issued by the end of 2008, and that they will be accepted by
at least 100,000 merchants. There are 20 billion payments under GBP 10
UK with a value of approximately GBP 200 billion per year. This new
technology is expected to increase small value transactions and places
accepted, such as coffee shops, newsagents, and in taxis.
