Corillian and StrikeForce Technologies have teamed to help financial institutions proactively prevent identity theft and fraud, strengthen online banking authentication and comply with FFIEC guidance. The partnership will protect financial institutions’ online users with a comprehensive authentication service combining Corillian’s Intelligent Authentication with StrikeForce’s “Out-of-Band” authentication platform, ProtectID. ProtectID creates a separate pathway for users to enter a PIN over the telephone that takes seconds to authenticate the identity of the online customer. Biometric devices, such as fingerprint and iris scanners, as well as one-time passwords (OTPs) can be added or substituted for additional versatility and layers of security.
Nova Southeastern University, the nation’s seventh largest private university, has chosen Siemen Communications for a multi-functional contact/contactless smart card program. The new smart card technologies will provide NSU students, faculty and staff with identification cards, physical and logical access privileges and the ability to pay for purchases such as meal plans, printing services and vending machine items. The initial deployment phase will include the distribution of more than 30,000 chip-embedded multi-application cards, utilizing both contact and contactless radio frequency identification technologies. Virginia-based Everest Software has teamed with Payment Processing to offer a fully integrated payment processing solution to small and medium-sized businesses. Under the terms of the agreement, Everest will leverage PPI’s payment processing services with its new PayBridge product, a fast, efficient, and affordable integrated payment processing solution, specifically built for SMBs. PayBridge will allow Everest customers to implement integrated and secure credit card processing systems into their existing operations. For the first time, SMBs can now leverage a single resource to significantly simplify the process and reduce the costs associated with accepting credit card payments.
MasterCard International has launched the “MasterCard Financial Know
How” program, a consumer education program designed to give consumers
access to free, easy-to-understand tools to help manage their personal
finances. A key component of this program is the “MasterCard Financial
Know How” interactive website, aimed at providing Taiwanese consumers
with information on personal financing. “MasterCard Financial Know How”
is a professional website that teaches consumers how to manage their
finances well. The website includes free, easy-to-use information, tips
and resources for consumers, including six smart tips for personal
financing. These tips include curbing spending; assessing one’s debt;
setting a goal; creating a plan; tracking spending and paying more than
Bank of America and VISA have launched an “Olympic” prepaid VISA card to be used by each athlete and staff member for their daily per diem at the upcoming Games. The card, featuring the image of a flag bearing the U.S. Olympic Rings, providing a better alternative to cash and checks, gives immediate access to their funds throughout Torino and at tens of millions of locations worldwide. They are protected by Visa’s Zero Liability policy in the event of loss or theft and will help reduce administrative and processing expenses for the USOC.
Motorola has introduced a new service enabling money transfers and POS purchases with mobile phones. The new “M-Wallet” solution is network and device agnostic and works with GSM, CDMA, or iDEN technologies and is compatible with Symbian, PocketPC, Palm, J2ME, Brew and SimTk. The solution consists of two components, a “M-Wallet” application that consumers and merchants download from the Internet and the “Wallet Service Center” which allows the operator to manage administration, registration, issuance of credit and debit cards, coupons, archiving, customer profiles and maintenance. Motorola says its new service will enable merchants to issue virtual loyalty or gift cards directly to their customer’s mobile phone. These cards can be redeemed via a mobile phone or can allow customers to conduct secure point-of-sale transactions, collect loyalty points and obtain store receipts at existing retail merchant locations. “M-Wallet” users must opt-in to receive coupons or other promotional services, allowing them to choose preferred merchants who participate in the program and thereby reducing spam.
A survey conducted for TrueCredit by Roper Public Affairs has found that 51% of Americans say that losing 10 pounds would be more difficult for them than paying off their credit card debt Respondents indicated that their number one resolution is being healthy (33%) or spending time with family (26%) than answer paying down their debt (20%). Additionally, 43% say they purchased less on credit this holiday season than the previous year and 48% report that they have the same level of credit card debt as the previous year. TrueCredit educates consumers about credit management and empowers them to improve their borrowing habits.

Massachusettes-based Constant Contact has found that Valentine’s Day online sales will be much stronger this year. Of the U.S. small businesses owners who responded to the 2006 Small Business Valentine’s Day Outlook survey, 55 percent of those surveyed anticipate strong Valentine’s Day sales, an additional 71 percent are predicting stronger online sales this year. Hospitality (restaurant, travel, and lodging) led with 76 percent expecting strong sales this year, followed by Retail (specialty shop, clothing store, florist) at 63 percent, and Consumer Services (i.e. jewelers, spas, beauty salons, fitness and photography) at 48 percent.
