A new MasterCard study reveals digital wallets are the main topic of discussion online when it comes to payments innovation in some of the world’s biggest emerging markets including India, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria and the UAE.

MasterCard released new standards designed to help employees take full advantage of the benefits of having their paycheck electronically deposited onto payroll cards. The payroll card standards require employers and payroll card providers to offer cardholders greater insight on how to access their pay through educational resources and increased transparency of any fees. Additionally, the standards ensure the employee has a fee-free way to access their pay and check available balances.
Cardtronics announced Julie Gardner is joining its Board of Directors. Gardner brings to the role more than 25 years of marketing experience in the retail industry, most recently as Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Kohl’s, a value-oriented specialty department store chain. During her 14-year tenure, Kohl’s expanded from a regional company to a nationwide retail chain, opening nearly 900 stores during Gardner’s time with the company. Prior to joining Kohl’s, Gardner had a 14-year career with Eckerd Corp., a regional drug store chain where she held several management positions, including Chief Marketing Officer. Gardner joins the company’s Board of Directors in conjunction with the vacancy created by Robert P. Barone, who retired from the Board earlier this year after serving as a Director for 12 years.
GE and Chicago Ideas Week (CIW) announced GE Garages, a skill-building center that serves as an advanced manufacturing fab lab for technologists, entrepreneurs and makers. Opening on September 20, the GE Garages space will host a month of free hands-on maker workshops, conduct trainings on high-tech prototyping equipment and offer learning opportunities through a curated guest speaker series. Powered by TechShop and developed in partnership with Skillshare, Quirky, Make and Inventables, GE Garages aims to spark interest and greater participation in advanced manufacturing through making. The GE Garages location will also function as the headquarters for Chicago Ideas Week, a premier annual gathering of global thought leaders and an innovation platform that inspires, connects and activates the city of Chicago and beyond.
Joseph J. Plumeri is joining the Board of Directors of First Data, a KKR portfolio company. Having served 12 years as Willis Group chairman and CEO and as its non-executive chairman through July 2013, Plumeri strengthened Willis’ position as one of the world’s leading insurance brokers through industry-sector-leading organic growth and operating margins, strategic expansion, and a return to public ownership in 2001. Prior to joining Willis, Plumeri had a 32-year career at Citigroup and its predecessor companies. As CEO of Citibank North America, he led the integration of the consumer businesses at Citicorp and Travelers Group. He also served as chairman and CEO of Travelers Primerica Financial Services, vice chairman of the Travelers Group, and president and managing partner of Shearson Lehman Brothers.

PayAnywhere mPOS solutions announced the PayAnywhere app and credit card reader have been selected and deployed as the mobile credit card processing solution of choice to support CAMP MASTERS Popcorn sales across the U.S. Boy Scout Councils and Units selling CAMP MASTERS Popcorn will be able to boost sales and capture transactions from customers who may not have cash readily available. CAMP MASTERS Popcorn has partnered with PayAnywhere to make mobile credit card processing a key component in the sales process, integrating it throughout the entire program for Scouts selling in front of stores as well as Scouts selling door to door in neighborhoods. The PayAnywhere mobile credit card reader is a small accessory that plugs into the audio jack of smartphones and tablets, transforming them into mobile payment terminals that can swipe credit cards to securely process payments. PayAnywhere is used today by merchants ranging from billion dollar enterprises to the weekend neighborhood garage sale.
MasterCard announced the appointment of Syed Mohammad Kamal as country manager for Bangladesh and Mohammad Anwar Hossain as director, business development to reaffirm its commitment to South Asia. The decision to build a stronger presence locally has come about in part to the rapid development and industrialization the country has been seeing over the last few years and the promise of further growth which could be achieved through a more robust electronic banking and payments system. Kamal will be based in Dhaka and report to Vikas Varma, area head, South Asia, MasterCard Worldwide. He will be tasked with executing MasterCard’s strategy in Bangladesh, working closely with partner financial institutions, merchants and regulators.
