New research shows shoppers’ number one pain-point limiting them from regularly using coupons is forgetting them at checkout in-store. In fact, 79% of surveyed shoppers shared they would not buy an item if they forgot to bring a coupon in-store.

Then, when you want to use the gift card at the store, just show your phone to the cashier at checkout.For certain gift cards, you can check your gift card balance in real-time and get reminders to use your card when you are near stores. Oberthur Technologies and Ingenico payment solutions will jointly showcase a couponing value added service on an NFC SIM card. In line with the mobile NFC Value Added Services proposal POS terminals from the GSMA, this collaboration between both companies will enable retailers to securely dematerialize coupons and loyalty on an NFC Secure Element. Different products and solutions of OT enable this solution: the dragonFly NFC SIM card which is fast, secure and convenient, an application on the SIM card where the coupons and the loyalty card are stored and a mobile application for the end-user to see what coupons are available and manage them. Thanks to these, subscribers will be able to leverage on Ingenico’s large installed base of NFC embedded terminals across all geographies, managing loyalty triggering and coupons recognition. Checkpoint Systems is scaling up its Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) project with leading apparel retailer C&A from five to 25 stores. As part of the C&A project in Germany, Checkpoint is providing RF/RFID antennas, point of sale RFID solution, software and consulting services. This will ensure that the merchandise is available on C&A store shelves in the right color, size and fit so consumers can always find the item they want when they are ready to buy. Implementing RFID in store means that retailers are more effectively and efficiently able to manage inventory and enhance loss prevention efforts. C&A selected Checkpoint for the RFID project to analyze processes and procedures for store deliveries, replenishment and inventories. C&A already implemented source tagging with Checkpoint for RF EAS several years ago, as a stepping stone for a potential RFID deployment.

Responding to consumers’ desire for a simplified credit experience, Citi Cards is introducing its “Simplicity Card,” boasting a single rate across all purchases, balance transfers and cash advances, no late fees and no penalty rate. Designed based on direct feedback from clients on what they want and need in a credit card, the Citi Simplicity Card also offers customers No Waiting for Live Help; lets users customize their payment due date and set e-mail and text payment notification alerts based on their preferences and needs; and charges No Annual Fee. This is in response to findings showing over 50% of consumers paid a bill late in their lifetime, mostly for having forgotten the due date. It also lets users adjust the payment due date to better suit their needs as well as the option to enroll in Citi’s alerting services, which send a reminder of upcoming payment due dates via email or a message to their mobile phone.

E-commerce merchants will not be safe under the latest Congressional legislation known as the Durbin Amendment. The legislation would direct the Federal Reserve Board to issue rules to ensure that debit interchange fees are reasonable and proportional to the processing costs incurred. This conclusion, drawn by IdealCost.com, a consulting firm that reduces credit card acceptance fees for merchants without switching their existing provider, indicates language in the Durbin Amendment is vague and misleading. Subsequently, because e-commerce businesses won’t save any money, IdealCost.com is suggesting Congress let the industry regulate itself.

A survey commissioned by Cardways.com reveals that 81% of men and women prefer to receive gift cards for their birthday. Birthdays are the No. 1 occasion driving gift card sales. Nearly 90% of people agree the primary reason for purchasing gift cards is the desire for the recipient to get what they want and 55% purchase gift cards to avoid worrying about the gift’s color or size. The survey also noted that of the 81% who chose gift cards for the top birthday gift, respondents ages 35-54 favor them most. Across all age groups, women prefer gift cards more than men and that men are nearly twice as likely as women to spend more money on a spouse or significant other while women are more likely to spend more on children or grandchildren.
