Discover and NHL Agree to Extend Partnership

Discover Financial Services and the National Hockey League (NHL) renewed their multi-year sponsorship agreement. With it, Discover is an Official Partner of the NHL in the U.S. and will become title sponsor of the inaugural NHL on NBC broadcast on Thanksgiving Friday, now titled the 2011 Discover NHL Thanksgiving Showdown. Discover and the NHL will introduce a co-branded float titled “Frozen Fall Fun,” which will make its first-ever appearance in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. As part of the partnership, cardmembers will also enjoy opportunities to redeem points for NHL rewards, such as merchandise and tickets.

60% Couldn’t Care Less About Black Friday

In store sales are no longer meeting consumer expectations, with 60% disclosing their sentiments Black Friday sales are no big deal. Also, 53% of 2009 Black Friday shoppers admit they probably spent more than they saved while 30% say it wasnât worth their time and 27% now wish they would have stayed home instead. Black Friday shoppers spent $136 dollars on non-gift items over the course of the day on items such as gasoline, babysitters, food and parking. This, according to Western Union and Wakefield Research, also shows 52% will give the gift of CASH this year compared to only 44% last year, which Western Union is facilitating through its “$50 for $5” promotion allowing consumers to send up to $50 for five dollars anywhere in the US.

Western Union Returns the Love for Mother’s Day

Money transfer service Western Union has launched “Return the Love”, a
national Mother’s Day Campaign designed to encourage consumers to give
mom the perfect gift. Western Union, Wyclef Jean and “Queen of Latin Pop”
Paulina Rubio, “Return the Love” with special performances and
appearances at the Billboard Latin Music Conference& Awards with a
concert honoring military moms. A recent Western Union consumer survey
found 42% find it hard to shop for the perfect gift for mom. The survey
also found 42% of moms have pretended to like a Mother’s Day gift; and
separately, 30% thought the gift was either “thoughtful” but not a gift
they wanted, or they did not receive a gift at all. Kick-off special
performance dedicated to moms featuring Wyclef Jean and Paulina Rubio at the
Billboard Latin Music Awards, on April 29, produced and broadcast live
by Telemundo.

Western Union Continues Prepaid Card Expansion

Western Union continues it aggressive push in prepaid cards. The latest
card teams up with Grammy-Award winning recording artist Wyclef Jean.
The new “Wyclef Jean Prepaid Visa” joins the recent Western Union
“MoneyWise” and “Gold Card” reloadable prepaid cards. Part of the Wyclef
Jean deal is the promotion of the Company’s money transfer services.
Western Union says the relationship with Wyclef will be multi-faceted
and will include outreach through social media, grassroots events and
consumer promotions in the U.S. Wyclef will also be handing out cards
worth $250,000 total. Last week Western Union Company launched “The
Western Union Visa Gift Card.” In July, WU added a reloadable Visa
prepaid card to its “Gold Card” loyalty program. The cards are issued

SunTrust Intros Two New Usher VISA Cards

Atlanta-based SunTrust Banks has introduced two new gift cards in association with Grammy-award winning artist Usher, including the “In the Mix” and “Truth Tour” VISA gift cards. A portion of the card’s proceeds will benefit Usher’s New Look Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization aimed at giving aspiring yet disadvantaged youth a new outlook on life through education and real world experiences. As of September 30, 2005, SunTrust had total assets of $172.4 billion and total deposits of $113.7 billion.
