ETHICAL HACKING

Working with the University of Abertay Dundee of Scotland, NCR has been
focusing on stopping ATM criminal hacking before it happens. Rather than
reacting to threats, the partnership is developing an ‘Ethical Hacking’
program designed to stop hackers and viruses to focus currently on
protecting personal authentication measures required to gain access to
ATMs. Approved and partially-funded through the United Kingdom’s
Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), the “Ethical Hacking” program is
available in a ‘Bachelor of Science’ and ‘Masters of Science’ degree.
NCR has sold more than 50,000 licenses of Solidcore for its “APTRA” ATM
malware security; its “SelfServ” ATMs are the first to self containedUSB
protection; offers a Fraudulent Device Inhibitor, external illuminated
hardware inhibiting foreign device attachment on or around an NCR card
reader; and offers Intelligent Fraud Detection (IFD) to countering ATM
fraud, which detects fraudulent devices and alerts the deployer.

ID WORLD 2008

Wise Media has introduced its Technical Committee of “ID WORLD 2008,”
the annual conference and exhibition on advanced automatic
identification technology. First introduced in 2002, the conference
provides a vendor neutral perspective to host representatives of the
automatic identification industry, featuring emerging and established
technologies for identification solutions in a range of sectors. “ID
WORLD 2008” is to take place in Milan, Italy at the Milanofiori Congress
Center on November 18^th , 19^th and 20^th , 2008 and will feature such
industry experts as Dr. Joseph J. Atick Executive VP Chief Strategic
Officer with L1 – Identity Solutions, Richard Bravman CEO – Intelleflex,
Remy de Tonnac Inside Contactless Chairman, Matthew Finn Director with

Charter One Launches Cubs Debit MasterCard

OH-based Charter One Financial has launched a “Gold Debit MasterCard” for the Chicago Cubs. Cardholders earn points redeemable for free gifts including cruise accommodations, airfare, gift cards, and more for making signature debit transactions. Charter One has also added a special “Cubs Fantasy Sweepstakes” to promote usage of the card. Every time a customer uses the card for signature transactions they’ll be entered into a drawing to win Cubs prizes throughout the regular season. Last week, Charter One launched the “Make-A-Difference MasterCard”, a debit card affinity program that supports eight charities.

Charity Debit Card Affinity Program Launched

OH-based Charter One Financial has introduced a unique debit card affinity program that supports eight charities. Each of the eight charities will have a distinctive card bearing the philanthropic organization’s respective logos and images. Charter One is also making two additional cards available: a generic “Make-A-Difference MasterCard”, for those who wish to give anonymously without displaying the choice charity logo; and a special card called “ONE FOR ALL” that supports all of the charity organizations within the program. Charter One will also allow existing customers to convert to a “Make-A-Difference” card from the “MegaRewards MasterCard” debit card. The participating charitable groups include: Make-A-Wish Foundation, March of Dimes, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Cure Search – National Childhood Cancer Foundation, and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

Charter One Signs a Wal-Mart Banking Deal

OH-based Charter One Financial has signed a deal to open 67 in-store banking centers with ATMs in Wal-Mart Stores located in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York, even though Wal-Mart does not accept signature transactions for Charter’s debit MasterCard. The agreement will allow Charter One to open additional banking centers within its current footprint, as well as to expand into new markets. Charter One’s banking centers provide a full range of deposit products such as The Best Free Checking, totally free business checking, free online banking with bill payment capabilities, 24-hour ATM access, home mortgages, lines of credit, and business lending services. Charter One has $43 billion in total assets, making it one of the 25 largest bank holding companies in the country.

Charter One’s Free Gift Cards Strikes a Chord

OH-based Charter One Financial reports it sold more than 600,000 of its “MasterCard Gift Cards” from November through December. The bank says it projected sales of approximately 200,000 cards. Retail banking centers accounted for roughly 80% of total sales, while the remaining 20% were ordered over the Internet and phone. Charter One launched its new gift card in late October. The card was the first “MasterCard Gift Card” featuring no upfront fees for the card, or fees for processing. Bank of America, the largest issuer of bank gift cards, charges a $5.95 fee for new cards with up to $300 in value, and a $7.95 fee for values between $300 and $600. Most issuers of VISA- or MasterCard-branded gift cards charge processing fees. However, Charter One charges a $2 fee for each ATM withdrawal or cash advance and a $1 fee for each PIN POS transaction. Charter One Introduces Free MasterCard Gift Card

Cleveland-based Charter One Bank has launched the first “MasterCard Gift Card” that features no upfront fees for the card or for processing. The new stored-value, personalized card is available in 25 designs and in denominations from $25 to $500. Customers who request express processing are charged $50, but the usual turn-around time is 7 to 10 business days. Charter One charges a $2 fee for each ATM withdrawal or cash advance and a $1 fee for each PIN POS transaction. The card is good for six months. Other fees include a $10 expired card fee, $10 refund processing fee, and a $2.50 monthly inactivity fee if the card remains inactive after six months. Bank of America, the largest issuer of bank gift cards, charges a $5.95 fee for new cards with up to $300 in value, and a $7.95 fee for values between $300 and $600. BofA also charges a $1.50 for each ATM transaction on its network plus any surcharges from other institutions, a $2.50 monthly maintenance fee after six months, a $7.50 reissuance fee, a $15 check issuance fee, and a $25 fee for use of the card in excess of the amount stored.

FlexCash MasterCard

Charter One Financial has introduced the “FlexCash MasterCard.” The new card can be loaded with any dollar amount between $25 and $500 and is valid and usable until either all the purchased monetary value is used or at the expiration date of the card. The card is disposable and may not have any additional value added to it. The card issue fee of $5.95 will be waived through the end of the year as part of an introductory promotion. Charter One also issues “MegaRewards,” “MegaRewards Business,” and the “SmartBusiness OneCard,” a delayed-debit card.

Charter One FYI Alerts

OH-based Charter One Bank has launched Centerpost’s “FYI Alerts” to provide customers with account information via mobile phones, work or home phones, pagers, PDAs, email, and fax. Customers can choose to be alerted to account activity such as recent transactions, low balances, new e-bill arrivals and more. FYI Alerts will also allow users to request a full financial summary in the form of a “mini-statement” – which can be set up to arrive daily, weekly or monthly.

MegaRewards MasterCard

OH-based Charter One Financial has unleashed the “MegaRewards Business” program for its business debit cardholders. The card enhancement eables users of Charter One’s “SmartBusiness” or “Smart Business OneCard” to earn points toward free merchandise and travel benefits for every signature or non-PIN purchase they make. Under the “MegaRewards Business” program, Charter One small business checking customers will earn one point for every dollar they spend on a non-PIN MasterCard debit card transaction. Business customers can earn up to 10,000 points per month and a maximum of 100,000 per year. Points are valid for three years. Points can be redeemed for merchandise and travel on any airline. There is a $25 membership fee for the program annually that will be automatically deducted from each member’s checking account. The fee includes all enrolled cards on the same checking account. The annual fee is automatically waived for business customers who are active users of Charter One’s online bill payment program. In December 2000, the company was among the first in the nation to introduce a similar program for consumers.
